GREENS UP IN ARMS AS YORKSHIRE SPY BASE COMMITS TO US "STARWARS"
From Shan Oakes, Green Campaign for the Haltemprice and Howden By-Election
04 July 2008
|
Local Peace Campaigners affected by Counter Terror Bill
The present 'terror' legislation has been used to imprison local people who are protesting peacefully. The new Counter Terror Bill would make things worse.
For example, take the cases of Helen John, 68, and Sylvia Boyes, 62, who were both arrested in April 2006 under the Serious Organised Crimes and Police Act 2005 for trespassing just 5m across the sentry line at the US military base at Menwith Hill. They were protesting against what they felt were increasingly draconian anti-terrorism laws. In October 2007 they were both found guilty of trespassing at the US spy base and given a conditional discharge. Known in some press reports as the 'terrorist grannies'.
|
Shan Oakes, Green Candidate for the Parliamentary By-Election in Haltemprice and Howden says:
Under the Counter-Terrorism Bill 2008, these two elderly peace campaigners could be in bigger trouble. The Bill proposes that anyone convicted of a 'terrorism' offence could face a ban on travel, or a requirement to report to the police whenever they spend a night away from home. For example they might be told never to go near a base again, or never to travel abroad again .
Removing our Civil Liberties by Stealth - US Military Communications on our doorstep
|
|
Yet Menwith Hill also highlights a much wider removal of civil liberties by stealth.
"Today, protesters are challenging the government who secretively passed through parliament a decision to base communications for the US Missile 'Defence' System at the Menwith Hill RAF site, on the day that MPs were leaving Westminster for their summer holiday in 2007.
"The Counter-Terrorism Law is the same. This is about far more than 28 or 42 days. Our civil liberties are being eroded through a series of increasingly draconian laws."
|
|
Dr Caroline Lucas, Principal Speaker for the Green Party addressed a rally today at
the US military base at Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire.
She will address the protest rally at this US military facility in Yorkshire on the urgent need to achieve full independence from the US on matters where national security and sovereignty risk being undermined.
|
Locating elements of the US military's Missile 'Defence' System at military facilities in the UK amounts to a shocking betrayal of the British public by its leaders, said Dr Caroline Lucas MEP today.
At the demonstration this evening, Dr Lucas MEP will say: "Hosting the American Missile 'Defence' System makes Britain complicit in the US military agenda and places us on the front line of any future
US war. It seriously undermines our national security and enfeebles our political leadership.
"Let it be clear that there is nothing 'defensive' about this missile system. It is simply another component of the US strategy to achieve 'Full Spectrum Dominance' - in other words, full military control of land,
sea, air and space.
"It will enable the US to attack countries without fear of retaliation. Its development has attracted international controversy, inevitably carrying with it the potential to provoke a brand new global arms race and thus
increasing the danger of nuclear weapon use.
"The decision to allow the US to base communications at Menwith Hill was not subject to a vote in Parliament - an outrageous betrayal of public confidence given the huge importance and potential consequences of the missile system."
"The British people deserve to know the truth about covert US military activity on UK soil and concerns must be heeded by our political leaders. Yet, under this Government's Counter Terrorism Bill, crucial civil
liberties - such as the right to hold a peaceful protest - are being gradually eroded."

People - An Exclusive Interview with David Icke, Candidate in the Howden and Haltemprice By-election
|
|
Hello David Icke. Is this election the first step in a move into politics?
No. I'm just using the opportunity to draw attention to the issue of the Big Brother state, the global elite which is slowly taking over. I'm not entering politics as a career.
So what will you do if you win?
I'm think there's a one-hundred per cent chance that I won't win, but if by some chance I did,
I would resign. How could I stand up in the houses

David Davis says he wants to stop the growth of state knowledge and control over individuals. He does not want ever more government control but more freedom. We applaud the U-turn by the Tory party. News, Current Affairs - Greens stand for civil liberties in Haltemprice and Howden by-election campaign - July 10th
|
|
Greens argue that David Davis 's vision of civil liberties is in a
whole variety of ways far too narrow.
It will be difficult for him to see this himself because he is a
Tory politician and thoroughly immersed in 'old' politics.
Old-style politics stems from the imperialist scramble for global resources.
This has to stop: no more wars for oil; no more government backing
