Youth Music Mentors Scheme in Hull

Youth Music Mentors Scheme offers free music training to young people in Hull A youth music project in Hull which offers support to young people looking for a future in music is expanding the number of opportunities to take part.

The Youth Music Mentors scheme will offer the chance for young people with some music experience to learn more skills, with the opportunity to volunteer and take part in music masterclasses with professional musicians.
The project is aimed at 14 -19 years olds living in Hull and is being delivered by Music4U - the Humber Region Youth Music Action Zone.

Using local facilities such as the new recording suite at Rhema Youth Works on Newland Avenue, free weekly one-to-one training sessions will be run by musician and DJ Alistair Wilson of 10x10 Productions who will support young people with a keen interest in all forms of music to develop their potential.
Youth Music Mentors project co-ordinator, Samantha Sumerfield of Music4U said of the workshops: "We're pleased to be offering even more opportunities for local young people to learn music skills by working with a professional musician as their mentor."
Alistair Wilson, who also performs as a DJ said of the new programme: "I feel this is a great opportunity for some of the young creative talent in the city to be acknowledged, as well as helping them to learn how passing their skills on to others can be rewarding experience as well as a possible career".

All the workshops form part of a national programme of mentoring to help tackle antisocial behaviour and raise aspirations among young people. Funded by the DCMS via the Respect agenda, the Youth Music Mentors programme will get young people involved in music making and provide one-to-one and group mentoring sessions with peers, musicians and the music industry.
This pilot project in Hull is one of 14 national schemes being co-ordinated by Youth Music on behalf of the DCMS.

To get involved young people can contact Hull City Council's Youth Arts Co-ordinator Ruth Drake on 01482 616804 or email respect@humber-music4u.com

More information on Youth Music Mentors in Hull is also available on the Music4U website at www.humber-music4U.com and the project myspace at www.myspace.com/respectmusic4u
