National Volunteers Week 1-7 June 08

National Volunteers Week (1-7 June) is the busiest time of the year in the volunteering calendar and this year's Hull Volunteering activity diary is no exception.

Monday 2nd June To coincide with the anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's Coronation we will be announcing the name of a local charity whom we successfully nominated for the Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2008. This award is given for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improve the quality of life and opportunity to others and provide an outstanding service.

Wednesday 4th June at 3pm at the KC Stadium Craig Hall, one of Hull FC's top rugby players will be 'kick starting' the Hull vinvolved project. Over the next 3 years the project will get 2770 more young people aged 16-25 into a variety of short-term, part-time and full time volunteering opportunities across the city.

The project will engage and support 16-25 year olds, in particular targeting those young people who are vulnerable or socially excluded, in a wide range of voluntary activities to help them realise their potential, reach their goals and improve their life chances.

Thursday 5th June Local MP Diana Johnson volunteering at Hull Churches Home from Hospital Service on Princes Avenue. The organisation supports vulnerable people through a period of convalescence to continue to live confidently in their own homes. Friday 6th June - Hull Volunteering Fair at the City Hall The main activity of the week. Open to the public between 11am and 3pm the event will feature 60 volunteer involving organisations from across Hull participating in this fun yet informative event to showcase their work to the public to inspire others to take on the volunteering challenge.

The event will also feature a selection of bands and street entertainers raising the profile of volunteering in our city.

Says Tom Grealy Volunteer Centre Manager at Hull CVS; 'Volunteers' Week is a national celebration of volunteers and volunteering which takes place from 1 - 7 June of each year. It plays a huge part in raising the profile of England's 22 million volunteers while encouraging others to get involved. Volunteer Centre Hull is working with circa 300 volunteer involving organisations recruiting volunteers to support their work.
