No GM Spuds This Year! By Hedon Against GM

Hedon Against GM are celebrating a massive victory after hearing the news that the plan to trial Genetically Modified potatoes has been scrapped for this year. Although Defra has given approval for the site to be used for the next 5 years, it is hard to see how the situation could change to allow the planting to go ahead. There is massive local opposition from the public, local and regional councils are totally against it and neighbouring farmers have expressed concern about the effect this would have on their livelihoods. Local beekeepers will not bring their bees into the area if there are GM crops present, therefore local borage crops which are grown in the area would not be pollinated.

This decision by the government was made regardless of the massive public opposition to the plans and on the advice of the Advisory Committee of Releases to the Environment (ACRE) who have stated that they are satisfied that trials at this site will not result in any adverse effect on human health or the environment. How do they know this? Hedon Against GM Co-Ordinator Lee-Ann Williams said: We are overjoyed that the potatoes are not going in this year. We will expect them to try again next spring so we have to keep the pressure up. It is the best thing that they could have done to give us more time to organise support and inform more people about the risks of GM.
