Local Students Arrested In Anti-Trident ProtestBy Aaron Fitzpatrick
This morning (1st June 2007) a man from Hull was arrested while attempting to blockade HM Naval Base Faslane in Scotland. He and two others had travelled up to attend the Strident (Students against Trident) week long tent-state organized, and attended, by students from all over the country.
Students came from Oxford, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Cambridge, East London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Kent, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sussex, Stirling, Sheffield, Warwick and York to protest alongside people from France, Ireland and the USA.
The protesters involved themselves in discussion forums, workshops and creative action against the recent decision to spend billions renewing Britain's nuclear weapons.
The decision, made on 14th March in the House of Commons, means that nuclear weapons and their attendant threats will remain a reality until today's students are in their fifties and sixties. It is the belief of those who travelled up from Hull, and the other members of the tent-state that this decision should be reversed and to demonstrate this, human blockades of the nuclear bases in Scotland were achieved as the workforce of the bases were on their way to work.
The Northern Access Road was blockaded fully for 1 hour, while the shore road and the construction gate roads of Coulport were also obstructed. Meanwhile, the South gate at Faslane was completely closed and the North gate was disrupted for 35 minutes, where the Hull contingent were taking part with one arrested. In total there were 37 arrests.
Aaron Fitzpatrick of Chanterlands Avenue, one of the three who travelled from Hull, argues
"The overwhelming majority of young people today oppose the renewal of Britain's nuclear weapons. It is our generation however that will have to deal with their effects: wasting billions of pounds that could be spent on the NHS, a potentially devastating terrorist target in our country and an incentive for every other nation in the world to arm itself with nuclear weapons too."
"This is why we took action, which could lead to arrest, in Scotland to try and hinder the activities of the nuclear base. Parliament didn't listen to the generation who will bear the brunt of their irresponsible decision.
They decided to disobey international law. By putting our bodies in the road and stopping access to the base, we were upholding international law and sent a clear message to government that today's young people are committed to peace."
The student camp and blockade forms part of a year-long protest, Faslane 365, in which civil society groups have daily attempted to block access to the base.

Latest News from the Blockade
We have been sent images from the protest, and of the blockaders being cut out of their lock-ons by M.O.D. Police. The protesters are still at Strident Tent-State and are awaiting the release of their comrade. From what we understand this is not the first arrest during the protest.
Hopefully the trend of releasing blockaders arrested by M.O.D. Police the following day will continue so we may be able to show you some more tomorrow.
