A Great Win For Goodwin In The BURA Awards
|
The BURA Charitable Trust today announced the winners of its Awards
for Community Inspired Regeneration 2006, and Hull's own Goodwin
Development Trust has been selected as overall winner in category A,
'schemes with full-time paid employees'.
Sponsored by Communities and Local Government, these awards are a
celebration of communities that have identified and tackled issues
in their neighbourhoods and in doing so, have improved the quality
of life of local people.
|
|
|
Around 170 project entries were assessed this year but only nine outstanding
projects from across the UK have been selected for recognition.
As category winner this is an achievement that the Directors/Trustees
of Goodwin Development Trust who are residents of the Thornton Estate are proud of.
Dee Priestley, Chair of the Board of Directors/Trustees commented on the announcement:
'We are delighted with announcement of the Award. This is great news for
Goodwin Development Trust and will help to raise the profile of
Thornton Estate, The Octagon and what this community has achieved
over the passed 13 years.
|
|
Goodwin was set up as a charitable organisation in 1994 by residents of the
Thornton Estate in Hull who wanted to improve their quality of life and the
services available on their estate.
|
'From this catalyst of community spirit and entrepreneurial drive
has grown an organisation that now employs over 300 people throughout
Hull, and is involved in many community projects.
However, we won't be resting on our laurels.
There is still much that can be done to improve the quality of life for
the residents of Thornton.'
Speaking on behalf of the Directors/Trustees Dee added 'As our home
and the base for Goodwin Development Trust the heart of Goodwin is
the Thornton Estate and we will continue to focus on doing the best
we can for our community.'
|
|
|
Leader of the council Carl Minns said 'This is good news for the
Goodwin Development Trust and good news for the city. What this award
actually means in practice is that the residents of the Thornton estate
are getting a better deal thanks to the hard work of local residents.'
|
|
Speaking on behalf of Communities and Local Government, the scheme's sponsors,
Liveability Minister Baroness Andrews said:
'These awards go hand in hand with the work to which we are committed in government.
Promoting community led action enhances the quality of neighbourhoods for local people.
All the projects recognised by BURA are excellent examples of how creative and
innovative communities can improve and make a real difference to places and communities.
My hope is that the work doesn't stop here, and these groups continue to take
pride in where they live and inspire others do to so, so helping to create a
sustainable future for all.'
|
|
This accolade follows on from the success of Goodwin's flagship building,
The Octagon, as highly commended in the National RICS Awards and as a finalist
in the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards.
