Press Release - Make Poverty History - Mass Crossing of Humber Bridge Monday 27th June

Hull cyclists will be taking part in a mass crossing of the Humber Bridge in support of the Make Poverty History campaign.

The Jubilee 2005 Africa team cycling from London to Edinburgh will be met on Monday 27th June by cyclists from Hull at the south side of the Humber Bridge.
Hull cyclists will then join the 21 riders of the Africa team in a cavalcade across the bridge, along Hessle Road and into the city centre for a rally in Queen Victoria Square. The BBC may do a live Tour de France style broadcast on Hull's Big Screen. A ten minute version of The Merchant of Venice will be performed by the Africa team to illustrate the plight of the world's poor.

The Africa team will have with them in two support vans, campaign materials, stories, information and messages from some Christian Aid, Cafod and Vetaid projects in Tanzania and Kenya where part of the team are currently cycling.
Other activities in Queen Victoria Square include a postcard signing, to be delivered to the G8 Summit in Gleneagles, and a raffle for two tickets to see a Hull City AFC pre-season friendly match. The raffle is in aid of the Swanland Primary and High School Kawangware in Nairobi, Kenya which is supported by the St. Barnabas Church in Swanland, Swanland Primary School and other members of the East Yorkshire community of Swanland.
Diana Johnson, MP for Hull North and Hull City Council members will be available for comment along with the Green Party spokesman Martin Deane, Hull Fair Trade representatives and members of the Waters family from Swanland.

Pupils from Hull schools and Church groups will be turning out to wave off the cyclists as they exit the city along Beverley Road en route to York via Beverley.

9:30 am The Africa team and Hull cyclists return across the Humber Bridge en masse.
10:00 am Cavalcade leaves the bridge and sets off down Hessle Road heading for HullCity centre.
10:30 am Cavalcade arrives at Queen Victoria Square for rally, card signing and Play.
11:00 am The Africa team leave Hull city centre to continue journey to Beverley.
11:01 am Continuation of Make Poverty History based activities leading up to drawing of the raffle in the early afternoon.
