Newroz At The Spring Bank Community Centre
By Rich Mills

A quite Sunday in Hull, as we made our way to Orchard Park to meet-up with a group of young people, no-one could have guessed the vibrant multi-cultural event that was going on just off Spring Bank.
Newroz, a festival of fire as I understand the translation, has become an annual event in Hull that many will probably have never heard of.

It is at such events that you get to see the vast range of cultures that inhabit our city.
People from all across the world and those indigenous to Hull joined together in celebration of this traditionally Middle Eastern festival.

We were entertained by Kurdish dancing, as well as music from both local Kurdish bands and a singer who had travelled all the way from Iran, via London!
They even fed us. A good day was had by all, from what I could see.

And the young people who we took along to record the event on film seemed to enjoy themselves too, despite this being something that they had never witnessed before in their lives.
It opened their eyes to the fact that Hull is becoming more and more multi-cultural by the day.
