A warm and sunny day welcomed twenty members and officials of the Rail and Maritime Transport union as they came to Hull today to campaign for railways to be taken back into public ownership.

The RMT members, kitted out in orange high-visibility jackets, marched into the station flags flying and gathered expectantly at the station for the arrival of their union leader while leafleting passing travellers.
Green Party candidate Martin Deane, complete with Vote Green banner, welcomed RMT members to Hull's Paragon Station and spoke with them.

Renationalization of the railways is a key plank of Green Party policy for public transport. It must be reliable, affordable and attractive, said Mr Deane, who standing for Parliament in Hull North.
Martin Deane met union leader Bob Crow at Paragon Station, amid cameras and soundbites, and learned how £6 billion of taxpayers' money has disappeared into railway companies but has not been spent on the railways.

This is an incredible amount of money! Where has it gone, Mr Blair? This is a national disgrace. Fat cat director's pay won't make our railways affordable!
Bob Crow led the RMT members through Hull for an afternoon of demonstration, leafleting, slogans and whistles. Later that afternoon the RMT marched up Holderness Road to the East Hull Labour Party, where Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott holds his surgery.

A final statement from Martin Deane: Year after year renationalization has been passed at New Labour conferences - including last year's party conference. Yet where is it? The Green Party will campaign for it - AND we will do it! We're not in the back pocket of big business - we're too busy thinking about people and planet.
Give us the power and we'll give the railways back to you.
