PRESS RELEASE - Hull & East Riding Green Party Hull Greens come out on John Prescott's roof

The Green Party in Hull supports today's protest by Greenpeace on John Prescott's roof. Britain's chief scientist, Sir David King, has told us that "Climate change is a more seroius threat than terrorism."

Candidate Martin Deane says, ""Being Minister for the Environment, people expect John Prescott to lead the way on climate change. He must put carbon emission reductions at the top of the agenda - but when has it appeared once in this election campaign?
"Blair's lack of action on climate change is a more serious threat than immigration, so-called failing schools, and dirty hospitals put together. Already he has failed to implement the pittance that was agreed at Kyoto. That's one pledge we won't be hearing about.

"I hope Mr Prescott takes advantage of this free opportunity to have his house fitted with solar panels and energy-saving light sources. We live on one planet earth. We can't treat it like a used car."

Key Points on Climate Change

1. The world has become warmer over the last 100 years.
2. It is likely that most of the global warming over the past 50 years is due to the increase of greenhouse gases.
3. Levels of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere are now higher than they were at any time in the past 420,000 years.
4. To stabilise carbon dioxide concentrations, we must reduce global carbon dioxide emissions below today's levels.
5. If no direct action is taken to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere will continue to rise during the 21st century.
6. Without action, the world's average temperature is very likely to change more rapidly during the 21st century than during any natural variations over the past 10,000 years.
7. The effects of climate change will continue beyond 2100. In particular, sea-level will continue to rise for centuries after greenhouse gas concentrations have stabilised.
8. The climate system is very complex. We are generally sure of the direction of change (for example, the world WILL become warmer, and global average sea-level WILL rise), and we can give plausible ranges for those changes (for example, without action to reduce emissions, the world's average temperature will increase by between 1.4 and 5.8 degrees Celsius by 2100).
9. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the best source of information on global climate change.
