Gosschalks Award for Art - Ferens Art Gallery
YOUNG ARTISTS TRANSFER LIFE TO EVERYDAY OBJECTS
|
Vicky McCreath.
|
Dramatic installations by Hull art and design students have transformed a gallery space at Hull's Ferens Art Gallery.
The annual Gosschalks Award for Art prompted the collection of work in which the life experiences of Hull's students were transferred onto everyday objects.
|
Wilberforce Sixth Form College students worked with respected artist Adele Howitt to mount the exhibition, 'Transfer-mation' which runs until mid-November.
As part of the project, they made decorative surfaces using a variety of techniques so that they could transfer their ideas onto various objects for the show. The students created the images by considering their places in the world and comparing Hull today with its past. They then chose objects on which to display their images.
|
Adele Howitt said: "The arts are an integral part of life and this project hopes to demonstrate that theory. Art can be seen as a voyage of educational discovery - they are not just a fun thing to do but rather an accessible system of learning."
For inspiration the students looked at the permanent collection of paintings and drawings at the Ferens. Their contributions for the exhibition will count towards A Level coursework.
"The students learned techniques they wouldn't otherwise get at school and college," Adele added.
|
Gosschalks partner, Nick Dean, said: "Following the success of last year's award, we wanted to give another opportunity for local students to work with a professional artist.
"This is our fourth annual award and we have been impressed with the skills and ideas that a large number of pupils have demonstrated. We are pleased they will have the chance to experience new methods with a leading artist."
The exhibition followed a week-long intensive workshop at the gallery.
Kirsten Simister, the new Keeper of Art at the Ferens Art Gallery, said that she hoped the project would inspire artistic students to go on to further study.
"The Ferens is delighted to collaborate on this valuable educational project."

The Gosschalks Award for Art was launched in 2000 to encourage artistic excellence among young people in Hull.
Born in Lancashire, Adele Howiitt studied at the Jacob Kramer College of Art (Leeds College of Art), Chelsea School of Art and Guildhall University, before moving to Hull almost two years ago to produce a six-month residency with Artlink Exchange at Stockwell Primary School. She has since been involved in other community projects including work for Creative Partnerships.
The project has also received support from Artlink Exchange

Driving - Jo's DRIVING LESSONS
|
|
Here I was living alone with my 3 children, my husband having just left us to cope alone. My eldest daughter, only just 18, was keen to learn to drive and I didn't want to spend a fortune on driving lessons, at least not until she could learn as much as she could from me.

- My September 11th 2001
By Mo
|
|
I'd spent the better part of my working life in Wall Street, having migrated over on the software developer slave trade back in the early 1990's, so Manhattan was in effect my second home, and I had often cause to visit clients in various floors of the nearby twin towers.

Ask Dorothy Advice Column, - My life is ruined.
|
|
Dear Dorothy,
writing to you is a last resort. I am so depressed I could kill myself.
Last year I spent all summer with my dad converting our garage into a practice room for our band. We had weeks of great weather, barbecues - me, my girlfriend and my buddies all shared this great close bond.
It was the happiest time of my life...or so I thought. Everything started to go wrong,

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2003 By Tony
|
|
What a pleasure to be here for 2 days (24th - 25th August)! We were fully entertained with a diverse mix of aircraft.
Both days of the flying program opened with the superb Red Arrows. Unfortunately, on the first day they had to abort their display for safety reasons when three light aircraft strayed in to the six mile display zone. Without doubt there must be an investigation into this misdemeanour and culprits brought to book.

Part One - 1973: Super tug to defend fishing fleet
|

By John Boldock

It was a nice morning as we congregated outside the offices of United Towing Co in Nelson Street. This building was once the ticket office for the now defunct Humber ferry. For a few coppers you could steam across to the other side of the Humber to a land still inhabited by alien life forms more commonly known as "Grimsbyites".
