City Arts E-Newsletter - Rhythm House in Hull Latin American & African Drumming Event at City Hall
Young people from Maybury Youth Centre, East Hull, West Hull Warren and Hessle Road Yoof Network are taking part in a six-week Latin American and African drumming project that culminates in a free public performance at the Mortimer Suite, Hull City Hall on Friday 20 February at 7.30pm.
The project, known as Rhythm House, co-ordinated by The Firebird Trust working in partnership with Music4U - the Humber Region Action Zone - Hull City Arts Unit and Hull Youth Service, is the first of its kind in the area and gives young people the chance to work alongside some of the best drummers in the world.
Led by musicians Alan Raw and Darren Squires from 'Tall Orders Arts & Media' who are a social enterprise group with a wealth of experience in world music, drumming and running workshops, the young people are learning the techniques of drumming.
Alan explained: "We are working with 28 teenagers across the three youth resource centres. None of them have ever done any drumming before. They have been trained to a high standard to allow them to play confidently as a performing drummer with any samba group or African band."
Prior to the performance at the Hull City Hall, the young people from all three youth resource centres will come together for a series of drumming master classes led by Magatte Dieng, a master drummer from Senegal, West Africa and Inner Sense, South American drumming specialists.
