Adventure Zone Crisis
By Tricia

Hull's only Adventure Zone (previously known as North Hull Adventure Playground and locally known as Addy) is under threat of closure or certain destruction due to lack of funds for staffing. Voices In Play (VIP), a local residents group are appealing for finance to keep the Adventure Zone supervised and therefore safe for youngsters in the area to play.
For many years now it has not been funded by Hull City Council although on occasion they have helped out with one-off payments to save closure.
The main issue is core funding for staffing costs and you need staff to ensure the children's free play and safety. All the current publicity in health and play promotes free play as children of all ages and abilities learn through play.

It is a disgrace that tens of thousands of pounds will go up in smoke if no one steps in to save the park and the staff.
They need a skeleton figure of £43,000 to stay running for the next year but really need to be part of core funding via the council.
We all know Hull City Council is in financial trouble, but if the city loses this one, some bright spark will say; Let's build another new project .. and again forget the long term problems i.e. core funding.

Whilst the park can access project money from various funds, it's staffing that's the issue. Over 1000 children use The Adventure Zone each year, including lots of children with disabilities.
Voices In Play are trying to rally the community around but I will say many people of the community still have not heard of it or used it although it's been there for the last 13 years. We should get more community involvement and possibly community management, and that would be the first issue to sort out.

You can help by contacting your local Councillor & MP (see phone directory for how to contact them) and asking them to save Ull's only Adventure Playground.
For further information about the Adventure Zone and its future, please email Helen Gundry, co-founder of the management committee for the park at helenspost@msn.com , or leave a message on the Adventure Zone answer phone, 01482 492648, and they will ring you back.
