09 New Adelphi Club Celebrates 25 Years as the Live Music Capital of Hull Words and Pictures
by Michelle Dee
October 2009 the Live Art Space inside Ferens Art Gallery in Hull was the location for the world renowned music venue Adelphi Club's 25th Anniversary Exhibition .
Not just a flick through dusty old flyers and posters and a drunk in the corner slurring, 'I was there when Oasis played.' No sir, this is a celebration of a club that has been at the heart of live music in Hull for quarter of a century.
And there's a tour bus inside the Ferens, plastered with the famous hand written flyers, proclaiming the very fact.
The installation is the invention of Chris Dimmack Architectural Design tutor at Hull School of Art and Design. He has used his skills with typography to create an eye catching poster design.
The famous sign that hung in the back room of the club that reads 'Twinned with your Darkest Thought', now hangs on a different wall.
With student's and volunteer's help Chris has reproduced something that will feel, in a few hours time, like the Adelphi club is right there in the city centre gallery.
The opening night saw over 250 live music fans and supporters of the long running club, come together to celebrate and share in what will almost certainly be one of the most important places they will find themselves in during their lifetime.
In true Adelphi Musician's night spirit, talented singer songwriter John Copley, treated us to a few choice numbers that reverberated eerily around the Ferens' high ceilings.
At the rear of the tour bus, that looks as if it has just reversed into the space, we find the boot open and a number of Hull compilation LP's and the odd Housemartins one on the back shelf.
Spilling out of the bus and onto the floor are smart flight cases rumoured to have been abandoned by Pulp at the Adelphi many years ago.
These have been decorated with large black and white photos of musicians, that have all played on the Adelphi stage, such as Alex Kapranos, Thom Yorke, Kimya Dawson, The Paddingtons and a picture of club proprietor and live music guru Paul Jackson himself.
Also at the rear of the bus are a number of TV screens showing live gig footage filmed by The Housemartins et al and a special preview of the forthcoming Adelphi Documentary to be released in 2010.
In front and behind the bus we find mannequins lined up, dressed in special edition Anniversary tshirts. On the walls there are old press cuttings, lyric sheets and prized set lists to please the music buffs. Under a vitrine there are early demos on cassette by The Housemartins and Oasis.
On the wall, a painting completed just two days before opening night.
It is a colourful caricature of a cut away Adelphi club depicting a familiar scene of a band packing up outside, pool playing inside, and a rare glimpse as to what might above the famous bus fronted bar.
The picture echoes the club's website design and shares a similar joke.
For one night only, there is a very special brew being served alongside the sparkling wine inside the Ferens tonight. It is called Jacko's Jockstrap, and it's a heady old number for sure.
For the last year Paul Jackson has been building ties with local breweries and now the bar boasts different guest Ales almost every week.
Not only the best in live music, now you get some remarkably good beers to accompany it.

Laser lighting on stone-effect walls, leafy green palms, day-glo carpets, cascading waterfalls; a definite sense of fun and theatre. It's almost like walking onto the set of an Indy movie or entering the Aztec Zone from popular BBC game-show The Crystal Maze.
This is the spectacle that greeted me on entering the soon to be re-opened New Tower Night Club in Hull.
