The Alarm at The New Adelphi - Thursday 5th May 2011
By Melanie Fullard

We arrived at the Adelphi and we were most upset - we couldn't get in the car park. A huge black tour bus had taken up the back spaces. Were Motley Crew here, or summat? Well, it is the new Adelphi; the beer mats have been changed and there's a new door on the bog, so I suppose...

The support were a band called The Last Republic. They were a Welsh band, a bit like a raw U2/Keane combo. They had loads of energy and really enjoyed themselves. The sound mix was a bit ropey and didn't do them any justice but watch this space!

It's 9.15pm, in come The Alarm. The banner reads, '81-2011, 30 years! I look around, it's full of middle-aged blokes but that's the crowd these days.
We were teenagers in 1981, we just never grew up. For Hull, the 80's never left, spikey mullets and cut-off denim jackets are still very close to our hearts!

Mike Peters sounds great. I had forgotten how many great tunes they had until they played them. '68 Guns, Spirit of '76, Where Were You Hiding (when the storm broke), Sold Me Down the River, Rain in the Summertime.
The crowd love them; they salute and serenade them loudly. Peters has so much energy and passion. You wouldn't think he had battled cancer. He talked about a fund-raising trip he had done up Kilimanjaro with Glen Tilbrook from Squeeze. I reckon he could do it before breakfast and then go for a run!
The band continues to raise money and had held an on-line auction prior to the gig. The lucky winner was Keith from Hull who paid £101.01 for the privilege of doing A number on stage with the band. I reckon if they'd had a whip-round instead, they would have made a lot more. For Keith, it was money well spent and he was well chuffed.

Mid set, Mike goes into the crowd with his guitar, the lads go mad! It could have been a Take That gig, he nearly never came out! There was a lot of love for Mike and more than a bit of 'bromance' going on. It wasn't only nostalgia that had been stirred for these punters (their lass was in for a treat tonight!)
After a cracking set the band stand triumphant at the front of the stage. Our only complaint was that the set was only 1 hour 10 minutes with no encore - we wanted more. Instead I had to make do with Best of The Alarm, £5.49 from Itunes. My old Fiesta will be rocking for weeks. Now where did I put that denim jacket?

'And now they're trying to take my life away. Forever young, I cannot stay. Hey'

You know what lads? You're not doing too bad!
Music Reviews - Riff Raff Enthrall Audience at Legendary Adelphi - Friday 27th May 2011 By Michelle Dee
After Hurray for the Riff Raff signed to Loose Music at the beginning of 2011, it was only going to be a matter of time before the American Folk band played their first U.K. tour. It has been a busy schedule with nine U.K. dates in all and numerous press engagements, interviews and radio air play. It seems Alynda and Huey, fellow New Yorkers, built up quite a rapport when he interviewed the band on his BBC 6Music show. Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 12th February 2011 - The Talks, Jokerz and Hold Your Own at Lamp By Jonathan Cain
On 12th February 2011 I once again embarked upon the noble quest to the Lamp in Hull. This journey was to once again witness the awe striking performance of one of Hull's greatest bands. I am of course talking about The Talks, just like on the 30th October 2010 I entered the Lamp with curious eyes still astounded that such a small pub had a pool table never mind a stage. Music Reviews - Justin Currie at The Picturedrome, Holmfirth - Saturday 22nd January 2011 By Melanie Fullard
Holmfirth, Last of the Summer Wine country. 1.51 mins with traffic. One of the most unlikely places for a gig. The Picturedrome has a small intimate feel with good stage views and approximately 500 capacity, some seated. It's now 9.pm. Justin has decided to go it alone these days and enters the stage with an acoustic guitar and a keyboard in situ. It's good to see him again. He opens with Always The Last To Know Read more...

Music Reviews - Beneath The Eyes Of Eternity at Pozition - Wednesday 24th November 2010 By Jonathan Cain Photographs by Jim Hawking
As I've said before I'm a ska fan. I do like to dip my fingers in the metaphorical music pie, who doesn't? But if I'm being honest, I've never been a fan of hardcore music or what is commonly known as 'Screamo'. However there are those few bands in this scene that make me think, 'wow'. It happened the other day at a venue called Pozition which held their fabled 'rock night', playing host Read more...

Music Reviews - Signe Tollefsen, The Woodwards and Adam Donen at The Adelphi - Tuesday 2nd November 2010 By Michael Overfield
On Tuesday 2nd November 2010 at the Adelphi Club, a gig was organised which celebrated the launch of three new albums created by three very different music artists. The nights line up was as follows; Adam Donen, The Woodwards and Signe Tollefsen. Adam Donen's performance was bewitching. The tracks sung from his soon to be released album Immortality were remarkable. As his lyrics melted into the notes of his he spoke personally to the crowd Read more...

Music Reviews - The Talks at Lamp - Saturday 30th October 2010 By Jonathan Cain Photos by Mandy Whittles
I pride myself on being a ska fan, from the original 1950's, to Two Tone, to Third Wave I am ska fan through and through. When I was sixteen I saw my first ever gig Reel Big Fishand swore to myself, that I will never again see a gig that will be in the same league as that performance. Well today, 30th October, that vow was broken. I enter a small venue by the name of Lamp, a small tight looking pub covered from wall to wall in Halloween decorations, Read more...

Music Reviews - I Like Trains Album Launch at The Deep support from Sam Airey - Thursday 14th October 2010 By Jonathan Cain
In my opinion the best thing we do as humans is create music. It has the power to make you laugh, make you dance and even stir emotions that no one can describe. Each person's interpretation of music is different: it can make you happy, it can make you sad, it can make you remember a time that you long forgot and make you want to burst with feelings. Music Reviews - The Manic Street Preachers at Hull City Hall - Tuesday October 5th 2010 By Melanie Fullard
It always amazes me what a great venue, Hull City hall actually is. It stands up to the likes of Shepherd's Bush Empire, any day. There's a full house and the band enter to Echo and the Bunnymen-nice choice. In comes the band. James Dean Bradfield looks older, more weathered somehow? The same feeling you get after not seeing your brother for a year. He looks different but when he opens his mouth, Read more...

Music Reviews - Late Night Fiction, Windum Earl, Blacklight Pioneer and The Belle Collective at The Adelphi - Thursday 14th October 2010 By Dick Spring
You know when you see a billing that gets you hopelessly excited with anticipation, yet can often end up being an anti climax, or worse still, a disappointment? Well, scratch that thought. There was no such feeling tonight as a healthily busy Adelphi was testament to. Opening up the show was a shortened set by The Belle Collective, who have been quietly and steadily building a reputation locally with gypsy folk inspired pop, Read more...

Music Reviews - Jesse Malin at Fibbers, York Thursday 24th June 2010 By Steve Rudd
Two years since he last visited the grand old city of York, New Yorker Jesse launched into his set with reckless abandon, hitting out with a volley of brand new material, before harking back to the olden days with tunes such as Queen of The Underworld (lifted from his debut release, The Fine Art of Self-Destruction) and Black Haired Girl (one of the finest cuts on his sensational Glitter in The Gutter LP). Backed by The St. Mark's Social, Read more...

Music Reviews - Men Diamler at The Adelphi, Hull By Michelle Dee
It would be a crying shame if I wasn't to tell you about the artist I saw playing at Adelphi in Hull the other week. Really? Do tell me, who did you see? The poster said Men Diamlerso I was thinking, something group-based, slightly Germanic maybe, and electro possibly? So I was pleasantly surprised when a disheveled youngish chap with dark curly locks picked up a weather-beaten guitar and began playing.

Music Reviews - Monday 4th January 2010 - Antiproduct, Psychobabylon and Chris Catalyst at Fibbers, York By Steve Rudd
Boldly deciding to stage a gig on what is purported to be the worst day of any given year to put on live music full-stop, Mister Martyn of Screaming Tarts fame thankfully managed to book cult-rockers Antiproduct for a date on their scandalously short but undeniably thrilling tour of the UK. With Paul Miro unable to perform due to illness, the stage times of the acts were redrafted, allowing The Eureka Machines front man Chris May (AKA Chris Catalyst) to extend his solo acoustic set accordingly. Music Reviews - Tuesday 28 December 09 - Late Night Fiction, Turismo, The Holy Orders, Fudgey and The Acrobats at The Sesh By Katie Ashworth
Wandering towards Linnet and Lark at 10.30pm and I was impressed. I'd never been to The Sesh before, for some strange reason, so I had no idea what to expect. First impression: the place is packed; the people smoking outside are spilling from the terrace into the car park. Inside, the bar is busy, people filling the dance floor in front of the stage. I could barely move without having to push past someone, but I finally located my friends.

Music Reviews - The Yards at York Duchess, Saturday 28th November 2009 By Steve Rudd
Appropriately dubbed The Last High by the band, this gig in York sadly constituted the final-ever gig to be performed by The Yards. However, it wasn't a sad affair in the least. To the contrary, it provided scant excuse to mourn the band's passing, instead being the perfect opportunity to celebrate all that the York-based outfit achieved in seven years of writing, recording and playing as a unit.

Music Reviews - Saturday 25th July 09 - The Talks, Counting Coins and The Bron-Yr-Aurs at The Adelphi Club, Hull By Dick Spring Photos By Cilla
This was a most eagerly anticipated show by hotly tipped Hull band, The Talks following a couple of low key impromtu local gigs including closing the Springboard festival in Cottingham, and a once more packed Sesh at the Linnet and Lark, where they tore the hot sweaty roof off the place. They have also been playing some high profile shows opening up for two-tone ska legends, The Specials. This was their first headline show back in Hull for some time and with the numbers that were packing into the Adelphi, it did not disappoint. Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 29th August ThisisUll Live Featuring The Last People On Earth, The Bad Apples and Matt Thompson by Michelle Dee Bad Apples Photos by Dean Wilkinson, others by Michelle and Cilla
Quite simply the best band I've ever booked. The Bad Apples, just a hard working rockabilly group from Grimsby. Tonight is to be our last thisisull live show. After sixteen gigs down the Adelphi with different bands every month we are calling it a day with the live nights. Thanks to everyone who has played for us, who has paid their three quid at the door, who has mentioned our nights on a website or forum. Read more...
