One Voice Charity CD By Michelle Dee

Last week it was announced that thirty babies have died needlessly at the hands of their parents or carers since the Baby P tragedy. This week those responsible for the horrific torturing of the toddler have been named. Alarm bells continue to ring around the country about the safety of our children. Here in Hull, with the One Voice project members of the local rock/metal scene are working to highlight the issue of child cruelty and raise funds for NSPCC.

Laura, vocalist from metal band Divine Oblivion said that the idea came to her after seeing all the reports detailing the terrible catalogue of injuries sustained by the Haringey infant.

There followed more cases of child abuse and neglect, so together with fellow band mate Alex, they decided to do something positive and raise awareness of and funds for the NSPCC Child's Voice Appeal. Laura did some research and discovered that Childline can only manage to answer two thirds of the calls they receive. Laura and Alex decided the best way for them to raise money would be to create a charity album. Not just any charity album but one featuring the cr�me de la cr�me of rock and metal acts from the length and breadth of the country, hand picked after a bulletin was sent out over the internet.

The response to their request for support was overwhelming and they then had to embark on the difficult task of picking just who would get the opportunity to be on the disc. Laura looked at a number of criteria when choosing the acts including work ethic, commitment and each band's fan- base. Through this process the One Voice team has brought together acts from different sub-genres and locations to ensure a strong mix of diverse musical acts. The CD will also feature the title track One Voice, an ambitious composition written by Adam Dowd with contributions from all the different bands on the CD; a sort of heavy metal Heal the World from Hull.

The collaborative One Voice track is to be released as a single increasing the projects publicity and reinforcing the One Voice message. Laura and Alex's summer project has already garnered the attention of big hitters Metal Hammer Ð who have promised to review the CD Ð and Total Guitar Magazine who have promised to run a One Voice feature article. Added to this national press support, HMV have indicated that they would be prepared to carry the charity disc in their store. So what once was a laudable idea in January, has gathered momentum received official support from NSPCC and now has the opportunity to really make a difference to young lives across the country.

One Voice has been made possible by the invaluable support and guidance of the team at Element Studio. All the bands to feature on the CD will visit the newly refurbished professional studio and record their tracks with Dan Foster, a highly regarded and experienced recording engineer. Whilst at the studio complex the musicians will be able to take advantage of the facilities there-in, including the chill out area and cafe bar.
