Robert Prekop ... Dirt of Time By Steve Rudd

Robert Prekop is a young singer-songwriter who is currently residing in Berlin. Anchoring the majority of his soul-stirring songs with compelling acoustic-based melodies, he is building a reputation for himself in the capital of Germany by playing at Open Mic nights where he airs his material. The demos of a batch of songs he has recently posted on MySpace herald great promise, with his most extraordinary track being the deliciously dark Dirt of Time, a sublime song with a rocking mid-eight and a spine-chilling vocal performance that puts the rapt listener immediately in mind of Robert Smith.

'Trees can't speak,' he wails - to mesmerizing effect. Hannah, meanwhile, is a more downbeat but no less entrancing number, with subtle and thoroughly hypnotizing atmospherics going a long way to really draw the listener into Robert's extraordinary musical vision. Similarly, the delicately finger-picked majesty of We Still Grow is a slow yet beautiful song that is emotionally sensitive and undeniably moving. The last of his batch of demos comes in the form of Three Seconds Sleep, a moody tune which is just shy of four minutes in length.

While many singer-songwriters might aspire to pen and perform relatively straightforward love songs, Robert Prekop admirably aspires to be different, proudly presenting unorthodox arrangements that never fail to intrigue. His songs do deal with themes of love, lust and loss, yet they strike far deeper chords than scores of songs written by other songwriters even attempt to do. As a result, Robert Prekop is most definitely a name to remember, especially since his mature and haunting music is impossible to forget.
