I am fortunate to have been able to sit down with Joolz Denby after the show. She has clearly enjoyed tonight and enthuses about her band NYAAA, proudly describing the media buzz surrounding them, how Chris Kimsey producer for The Rolling Stones, was following their every move - even inquiring as to how the Hull date went before they'd played it - and how NYAAA resolutely refused to be tempted on to a media merry go round.

We briefly touch on the history of music and poetry combined and how to some purists it is seen as a popularist art form, not worthy of the same attention and support as more traditional poetry presentation. Having now read some of her work I can see the poems clearly stand up on their own without the music accompaniment; as she said it just wouldn't work otherwise. I am interested to learn a little more about the background of the band members.

My first impressions are confirmed when Joolz describes front man Mik as a talented writer and poet and how their working relationship began when he approached her to act as a mentor for him. She continues to say that Matthew the bassist regularly works in under privileged schools encouraging the kids to read and write poetry. As Tom nonchalantly walks by, she is telling me how proficient he is in the art of music video production, recalling a series of well known artists and producers he has worked with.

This nurturing of young creative minds seems to stem from the formation of a creative commune set up in Bradford championed by Joolz herself. A collective that discovers genuine creative talent, then nurtures and guides the young artists in order that they fulfil their potential. Would that we had somewhere like that in Hull. Somewhere that genuinely cares about the artists' futures. Somewhere that wasn't all consumed by financial concerns and somewhere that wasn't just on a box ticking exercise. Somewhere that was willing to listen to what the real creative sector had to say, somewhere open, inclusive and productive, supported with real capital and with a fearless radical approach to creativity in the city.
