This was a most eagerly anticipated show by hotly tipped Hull band, The Talks following a couple of low key impromtu local gigs including closing the Springboard festival in Cottingham, and a once more packed Sesh at the Linnet and Lark, where they tore the hot sweaty roof off the place.

They have also been playing some high profile shows opening up for two-tone ska legends, The Specials.

This was their first headline show back in Hull for some time and with the numbers that were packing into the Adelphi, it did not disappoint. There had been an un-advertised band on first which I didn't catch a name for but they were four young students that had been taught by Talks singer, Pat and this was a debut gig for them all following some intense practice. I was impressed with their composure and ability for a first time out and with a top line bill of experienced bands they coped very well. Whilst their style of music didn't quite grab me (it was rock in nature but I wasn't quite sure if it wanted to be Prog, Metallica or Kings of Leon), with more practice I'm sure they will settle down and find their direction.

Next up came Bron-Yr-Aurs, a band who appear to have been off the radar a little in recent months, having blazed a trail onto the local scene a year ago. Tonight saw them celebrating that fact. They definitely had the crowd split, with a sizeable following of their own in attendance, as opposed to the more punk and ska element for the other bands. Nevertheless, they turned in a solid performance of sleazy garage punk rock'n'roll.

They are no slouches musically, but with a little more style counseling and a bit more urgency in the presentation, could well become the vanguard of a scene if there were a few more of their ilk. The night seemed to be running to time, unusual for The Adelphi, which tends to have a very spontaneous timetable for the most part.

Counting Coins are a very new name to the Hull music scene but have established themselves very quickly and firmly as 'ones to watch'. They play a genre which has not been very prevalent in Hull of late but was hugely popular and influential in the city between '99 and '02. That being ska punk. They have only played a handful of shows but have already built up a sizeable following, with a punky ska sound akin to american ska punk legends, Operation Ivy. They also give a nod to seminal American band Sublime.
