An hour after interviewing Mr Scroobius Pip (coming soon on thisisUll.com) I was ready for the live stuff, Mr. Beasley with Bob doing some wicked things with beats and Sarah snaking and shimmering on the stage, her sonorous voice so entrancing. Some people say that the childlike quality or tone defers from the enjoyment, but I'm a fan for sure.

Shame they opened the set with Right as Rain the new single released digitally worldwide10 Nov 08. I'd have preferred it much later on because for the first five minutes or so the atmosphere wasn't right for a Mr Beasley sesh.

People didn't know what to do; shy in Hull never. A little reluctant to get nearer the smallish stage inside the Johnny Mac Bar perhaps, but once they did, a healthy loose living vibe spread front to back. A shortish set finished with Neon, a track Mr. Beasley made famous a year or so ago, a big favourite both on record and in the clubs. Look out for the new single now on iTunes etc and check out the Unitone Productions video of Right as Rain by Jay Moy.

Next a brief cig and a pint of something a whole quid more expensive than it had been in the bar just a few feet away and I was ready for my first Kid Carpet experience. He opens with a track that sees him using one of his famed toys, those toys that brought him so much double edged press back in 2005 for debut album Ideas and Oh Dears.

This one is a plastic guitar head and neck. Kid Carpet real name Ed Patrick (it's an anagram) strums the device, a bit like a Thereminist plays with hands in the area surrounding the apparatus. It makes a noise akin to an electric guitar; he plays chords on the thing in thin air. He gives new meaning to the popular past time of playing air guitar.

Kid Carpet is touring with Pip and Dan promoting his second album Casio Royale on Rob Da Bank's label Sunday Best. In a lively set he quickly brings the swollen crowd new song Hitting the wall as well as new faves Carrier Bag and I don't want to fall in love with you and Can't stop the Pop. Kid Carpet sees magnificence in minutiae, importance in the ephemeral and, to all you crusty reviewers out there, he has got a wedge of wit and he does a good line in riotous repartee to boot.

As with his Adelphi show Kid Carpet is well received by the Hull crowd, he appeals to the student's sense of rauc and rock, albeit with electro sounds and disco beats. He gives the impression that its all so easy, the haphazard way he plonks a mini keyboard on top of another, the introduction of a Fisher Price ghetto-blaster and mic which he proceeds to sing with, coupling childlike madness with the random pastiche of old disco floor fillers. Brilliant fun, mightily enjoyable and I wait with unbridled enthusiasm for his next Hull appearance.

Then it is time for, what I believe is the debut Hull show, from the beat busting, lip-smacking pairing of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip. So Dan comes on, there's a roar of approval amidst beats and samples and thick plateaus of bass sound. It's already going off in the crowd, as the street poet/spoken word chap, avec cap, takes to the stage to read today's lesson.

Early on he speaks slowly and seriously for Angles a track taken from the new album of the same name, also on Sunday Best (UK) Angles the track, observes characters in life, exploring choices, uncovering isolation, self harm and self doubt.
