A band next, Great Northern Hotel have been around for a while but don't seem to play Hull very often. On the website Will J. Metheringham, says he does everything in the band, tonight everything was piano, for the opening tracks, followed by guitar and vocals throughout he was joined by Tara McKeown and for the last song by Kent on harmonica. With an obvious nod to the two-handers from t' South, Tara and Will played a short set of songs with a light touch, competent and listenable. I'd like to hear them again albeit in a different setting with a better p.a. luckily GNH hope to do a gig before Christmas.

With an album out early in 09, Great Northern Hotel are looking to release a single on iTunes via Confidential Records during the first week of December. It will be a duet with Charlie Webster presenter on Setanta Sports.

Next on stage was a spot of poetry, just to add a little variation to the night, plus I hadn't had a go since opening for Poetry is Dead at Zest Café in August. I shan't bore you with the details but let us just say it wasn't my finest hour. I got heckled by a local drunken sportsman who should have known better. As it was his heckling and the way I allowed him to get to me has taught me something. When one person is heckling and laughing at a performer it can feel like the whole room is against you. I have new found respect for anyone who performs on stage.

I've seen so many different bands, acts, and poets in the last few years it is easy to become blasé about performing in front of people. I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate all performers on their efforts past present and future. Headlining tonight were, Day In The City another young new band of with an average age of sixteen. This was their third gig and they brought along a handful or more fans from Beverley and Hull, to cheer them on. Nerves were clearly evident but they managed to get through their set despite being heckled and abused by the aforementioned drunkard. Really unfair they were only kids; I hope he feels utterly ashamed.

They had the rakish Indie styling, but it all needed an injection of energy and much more rock n roll swagger. This will doubtless come with more gig experience and practice.
