Last night Dave Abbot of DVA Studios held his second showcase of artists he has been working with supporting and recording in his home studio. Dave set up DVA in order to support new musicians give them access to a studio do early demo recordings in order to give them something solid to market themselves with. Look out for a DVA Sampler CD from DVA Studios featuring some of the musicians from tonight's showcase event.

The showcase held at Sharkeys is a chance for the acts young and older to get up on stage and play in front of a real audience. Dave wants to give them this chance because he feels a certain section of the music community can be overlooked somewhat by other live music nights.
Tonight was mostly a night for beginners, the two most accomplished acts were Great Northern Hotel and Jamie Gray but I will expand on them later.
First was a young guitarist Timmy D from Beverley playing tracks from his new album, I'm afraid his timid strumming and even quieter vocal didn't grab me. He is obviously passionate about the guitar, in particular the guitar solo, because halfway through his opener Just Tonight he embarks on a squelchy solo that does gives the overall performance a lift.

The thing is the stuff in between has to be played with the same level of enthusiasm otherwise the whole will lack balance. Timmy will improve given more time and more practice; axe-swinging like one of his heroes Halen and Hendrix.
However he does need to find a singer, because the voice doesn't stand up at all.
Frank Johnson singer songwriter played second and delivered a mixture of covers and originals the highlight being a reworking of Redemption Song that, vocally, owed more to Morrissey than Marley.

Frank runs an acoustic night at The Blue Bell Inn Cottingham every other Wednesday, where he encourages a relaxed atmosphere of busking in the bar with and commitment to providing a really good stage sound.
Alex Stork took to the stage in white jacket and looked something akin to a lounge act I half expected him to break into something a bit jazzy and slick, as it is, amongst a few self-penned numbers.

He covered a few indie acts of bygone years such as Ocean Colour Scene and possibly but don't quote me on this an unrecognisable Avril Lavigne cover.
Not really sparkling but to be fair it was a hard room to try and generate interest from the noisy pub crowd.
Fourth were Telenovela one of DVA's new bands, with as yet no recorded material. Their performance was fairly bland they could do with a second guitarist to add depth and again more practice. They appeared reasonably confident on stage but the vocal was pitched at the same level as the guitar sound so was for the most drowned out.

Perhaps if the voice was lifted an octave higher the songs would strand out more.
The final number was minimalist in structure two notes picked out as a melody played over the top with bass and drums joining in later on. Not the worst new band I've seen but nothing really outstanding.
Fifth, on a rather full bill, was Jamie Gray of Black and White Tango fame. He set up his keyboard the stage lights went down the glitter ball threw sparkles across the stage and the Jamie Gray experience began. Opening with a synth-dance number by way of a backing track, he overlaid his melodies and silenced the crowd for the first time tonight.

Jamie is self taught and composes and arranges his own material. He has just produced an album Viaje del Agitado of evocative and engaging tunes exploring different genre types. He continues to engage the appreciative crowd with Salsa Jam and Fable.
His final piece Fiery Slumber (piano version) he plays entirely live, without the backing track.
As is always the way, the technology breaks down and proceeds with considerable ease to lift the entire evening. Talented in composition and performance he blends popular and classical styles justifying the press comment from the band's recent Manchester show at In The City.

"Black and White Tango produced the surprise package of this years ITC official fringe showcase..."

Music Reviews - Sunday 16th November 08 - Guillemots at The Plug, Sheffield By James Marsters
The venue was small, the crowd was quiet and the songs were surprisingly new but that didn't stop The Guillemots from rocking out Plug in Sheffield on a freezing cold Sunday night. Opening with a new song may seem like a daring thing to do to a rather sedate crowd but it definitely set the tone for the rest of the night. Playing many fresh tracks interspersed amongst several from their first album, Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 11th November 2008 ... HYRMC01 at The Sesh. By Michelle Dee
The live music in the evening of HYRMC 01 came from a high spirited GST Cardinals and possibly the hardest working band in the city right now namely The Cliques. Also on the swollen bill down at the Sesh hosted by DJ Mak were singer songwriter Jody McKenna, Jesus Stole My Girlfriend and The Gang. Jody opened proceedings with some highly listenable Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 23rd October 08 - Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip With Supports Kid Carpet And Mr. Beasley By Michelle Dee Scroobius Pip Photographs by James Rogers Others by Michelle Dee
An hour after interviewing Mr Scroobius Pip (coming soon on thisisUll.com) I was ready for the live stuff, Mr. Beasley with Bob doing some wicked things with beats and Sarah snaking and shimmering on the stage, her sonorous voice so entrancing. Some people say that the childlike quality or tone defers from the enjoyment, but I'm a fan for sure. Shame they opened the set with Right as Rain the new single released digitally Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday July 25th 08 - Thisisull Live with Alison Angus The Clauberg Opera Santa's Buggerboyz. By Michelle Dee
In July we had a thisisull live gig but as yet no report on what happened. So here it is... Alison Angus were first up promoting new tracks from their Satis E.P. Unusually the two piece band set their kit up on the floor of the Adelphi in front of the stage, this was due to the fact the headliners had all but filled the stage with their equipment. They played their unconventional style of hard edged sculpted metal escapism, with drums, Read more...

Quite simply the best band I've ever booked. The Bad Apples, just a hard working rockabilly group from Grimsby. Tonight is to be our last thisisull live show. After sixteen gigs down the Adelphi with different bands every month we are calling it a day with the live nights. Thanks to everyone who has played for us, who has paid their three quid at the door, who has mentioned our nights on a website or forum. Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 24th July 08 ... Edwina Hayes at The London Bar, Driffield By Steve Rudd
The third night of its kind to feature live music in The London Bar (local lads Chaser along with Blues prodigy Oli Brown have both played there on previous occasions), Driffield's very own Edwina Hayes performed two hour-long sets on what was a truly unique evening. While the staff served exquisite four-course meals Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 25th July 08 - Chris Helme and Andy Gaines at Helmsley Arts Centre By Steve Rudd
York singer-songwriter Andy Gaines is something of a revelation. Confidently swaggering onto the stage in skintight jeans with a killer grin slapped upon his face, his batch of acoustic gems sounded sublime in what is a truly beautiful venue. Formerly a member of acclaimed York outfit Cardboard Radio, Andy also plays in a band called The Runaway Sons when he isn't playing solo acoustic sets. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 20th August 08 - Tegleg Records Sponic Mesh Two CD Launch By Michelle Dee
The flyer described tonight as electro/ acid/ dubstep/ legnbass/ mashup/ techno/ breakcore/ dogstep/ glitchtronica/ mentalism and spasmodic stimulation. Not having a clue what to expect I wandered down. Diving straight in the sounds are reeling around the ceiling, a barrage balloon shake down with a hard and fast tempo. Wired and weird images Read more...

Fast-rising sextet Divine Sinn have already managed to amass a loyal fanbase in the past six months since their debut gig at The Winston Churchill. Kicking up a storm in the wake of Parkmoor Read more...

Music Reviews - The Who 'Live at Hull'- Monday 16th February 1970 By Malcolm Holt
I know that it has taken a long time to write a gig review from over 38 years ago, but rest assured that the memories are just as vivid now as they were back then. I was a young 17 year old and I spent 15s (that's 75p in real money) to see The Who perform Tommy live at Hull City Hall on 15 February 1970. The Who had released the double album in May 1969. Music Reviews - Saturday 12th July 08 - Moonbeams Summer Gathering at Little Kelk By Steve Rudd
Who would have thought that a star-studded music festival in a tiny Wolds village could rival the exhilarating splendour of festivals of Glastonbury's ilk? Very few, I'm sure. But then how many people would really believe that an annual music festival of any sort has taken place in Little Kelk for the past four years? Even fewer, I'm positive. Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 15th July 08 - Chris Helme at Hull Lamp By Steve Rudd
Alighting in Hull as part of a glorious string of intimate UK tour dates in support of his recently released solo offering Ashes, York troubadour Chris Helme had the sizeable Hull crowd in fits of ecstasy due to the strength of his voice and the intensity of the emotions conveyed both through his music and lyrics. Only a few days previously he had wowed the gathered masses at a private mini-festival Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 26th June 08 - Divine Sinn at Winston Churchills, Driffield By Steve Rudd Photographs by Matt Rudd
Back playing in their hometown just a few days after their first gig in Leeds, Divine Sinn managed to attract the Metal-loving masses in their droves, despite the biblical deluge pounding the streets outside. Mixing and matching material from both their debut album, Redemption, and their forthcoming follow-up, The Seven Deadly Sinns, they energetically roared through Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 20th June 08 - Oli Brown Band at The London Bar, Driffield By Steve Rudd
Whoever came up with the idea of putting a band on at The London Bar deserves a pat on the back. It was certainly inspired. Moreover, whoever decided to allow Oli Brown and his band to play deserves to be bought free drinks for an entire evening. Indeed, Oli Brown & Band put on an incredible show in what has to be Driffield's narrowest pub. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 26th March 08 - Awash With AntleR At Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photographs by Ian Rook Photography
My first impressions of Awash With AntleR as my slightly beer-stained notes allow from Wednesday 26th March at Adelphi. Do with them what you will... These girls have a mad penchant for taffeta, nylon clad feet and vintage headgear. There's something rather inviting about them. Reminds me of a Miss Marple novel with debutantes frippery Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 16th May 08 - Moonbeams Acoustic Evening at The Old Town Hall, Driffield By Steve Rudd
A lot of people might not realize as much, but Driffield is fast becoming THE place to play host to a hotbed of musical talent from near and far, and it's all thanks to the impassioned enthusiasm and organizational capabilities of Kelk's Leila Slater. Leila adores live music so much that she's been putting on Acoustic nights at The Bell Hotel Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 9th April 08 - The Blueskins (Last Ever Hull Show), Kal El's Cape and Kill Surf City At The Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photos By Winston Sanders (Blueskins) and Michelle Dee (others)
After being approached by CRS Events to help promote The Blueskins visit to Hull it was with a sense of dismay that I learned that the band had taken the decision to split up the week before. They were playing their existing dates then calling it a day. It would seem that having EMI and Domino in your corner is not enough to guarantee successful tour attendances. Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 11th April - Scouting For Girls at Hull University By Gemma Durham
Scouting for girls delivered a belting performance last Friday, it is safe to say their a 2008 success story and continue to deliver top class performances to fans. I have been lucky enough to know the band from 2005 as an original wolfcub. The band started in 2005 with lifelong friends Roy Stride, Pete Ellard, and Greg Churchouse. The success of the band is largely down to the fans, wolfcubs, and airplay by Radio One. Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 28th March 08 - Thisisull Live featuring CrackTown, Black and White Tango and Mermaids in the Basement at the Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photos by Lucinda Livingstone Photography
A poorly fish was I on this dank Friday night, and after a series of delays I wasn't expecting the best of nights. How wrong was I? Just after eight there were queues outside and they kept coming in until well into the second band. An odd billing perhaps, putting CrackTown on with a couple of guitar and keys exponents but one which worked surprisingly well. Read more...

Music Reviews - Live Review and Interview with Alain from Isabel At Sunset (Tea Kettle Records) By Michelle Dee
I caught up with the Italian front man Alain on Bank Holiday Sunday evening just before his band Isabel at Sunset were due to sound check. Isabel at Sunset the critically acclaimed Parma band made quite an impact with their debut album Meet The Gang last year. Rave reviews followed from amongst others, Treblezine who awarded the five piece indie rock band Album Of The Week. Read more...

Music Reviews - 14th March 07 Moonbeams Acoustic Night At The Old Town Hall By Steve Rudd
Consistently featuring a wealth of talent, Leila Slater's acoustic Moonbeams events at The Bell are becoming bigger and better affairs every time. So much so that this, the third night of its kind, was relocated from The Maple Room into The Old Town Hall in order to accommodate the crowd. First act of the evening was Jasper & Smirt, a couple of local lads Read more...
