Park&Ride's Comeback Tour
By Paul Monkman (Friend and Foe)
(2/2)
(1/2), (2/2).

In that case, who's your new bassist and what qualities will he bring to the band?

'He needs no introduction really, but here's one anyway. His face will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has been to a Yo-Yo night in the last eight years, he's got more sex appeal in his little finger than Soft Mick has in his whole body and adds a new dimension to the band. He's also much better at cricket and knows how to shave - his name is Christian.'

So, is this the start of a swansong tour or more of a second coming?
'It's definitely a second coming, in fact, probably more of a third or fourth coming. It's really the start of a new era in truth; there's only one song left from the old days, so it almost feels like starting over again.'

Are there any fundamental changes for the new era?
'Like we say, we've effectively got a whole new set. The music itself is probably more mature, but the songs are still synonymous to our style, which remains the same. Live by the sword, die by the sword.'
Do you think there is still a market for local music in Hull?

'Any city that has produced such gems as Scarlet* and the Fine Young Cannibals will always be hungry for local music. There's no doubt that the scene has changed, however, as everything comes in cycles, especially music, and bands have to adapt. We feel we've done just that.'
*Note from writer: I couldn't help but think that was a sarcastic remark at the time and it seems all the more obvious now.
Why have you chosen Adelphi for your comeback gig?

'Well, it's always been the cornerstone of music in the city; it might be as old as your granny, look like your neighbour's dog but you still love it like your mum. Oh yeah, and you booked it for us when you were pissed*.'

*Note from writer: Guilty as charged, but I like to think I had their best interests at heart.

What other gigs have you got lined-up as part of the comeback tour?

'We're still finalising details for some gigs later in the month, but we're playing the Sesh at Linnet on April 8th.'
What does the future have in store for Park&Ride?

'Apart from the initial goal of getting Christian back on the old bedroom gymnastics rostrum, we're just looking forward to playing more gigs and seeing how the new songs go down. Then, who knows? Start up our own country, discover a new form of nappy-rash cream or learn Japanese - the world is our oyster.'
To catch the first gig of Park&Ride's comeback tour, an April 4th visit to the Adelphi is a necessity as it will not be broadcast on Setanta. Doors open at 7.30/8.00pm and it will cost some money to get in, but not a lot.
