The Warren And Hull Youth Council Presents Love Music Hate Racism At Hull City Hall

Last week saw the British National Party's membership list published on the internet; member occupations included teachers, doctors, nurses and a small but significant number of police officers who since 2004 have been unable by law to belong to the BNP. The Hull postcode was there, highlighting the number of people in the region who belong to the party and reinforcing the need to fight against racism that is obviously a lot closer to home than we may have hoped.

Next week sees the return of Love Music Hate Racism at Hull City Hall 6th December providing our local bands with an opportunity to showcase their talent next to artists which played all those years ago for the same cause that we are still sadly facing now. The day will start with an eclectic mix of Hull music from all corners of the scene and lead on to an evening of local and national heroes featuring pioneers of the two tone movement still supporting the fight against racism.

Racism and the threat of fascist groups like the British National Party (BNP) continue to be a serious concern in our society. The two things feed off each other. The disgraceful scapegoating of refugees, "foreigners", and British Muslims by parts of the media and some misguided politician's increases support for the BNP. When the fascists manage to con people into voting for them, the level of racism and racist attacks shoot up.

The publication of the BNP's membership list online last week underlined both why they are not a normal political party (otherwise why would people want to keep their membership a secret?), AND that it is not acceptable that BNP members should not be allowed to hold jobs of influence and power in the public service. They have done poorly in elections in Hull in recent years - a credit to the city's voters.

Hull City Council and the city's youth services and projects like The Warren have played a big part in undermining racism in the city, and should be congratulated for taking such a proactive stance - an approach other cities would do well to copy. But the presence on the "BNP list" of over 60 BNP members in the Hull area shows we cannot be complacent. These people will be out campaigning for the BNP to win a Euro MEP for the Yorkshire & Humberside region in June 2009 elections.

We urge everyone to get involved in the campaign in your workplace, school, college or local area - support Hull Love Music Hate Racism and our sister campaign Unite Against Fascism. Top music acts are once again coming to Hull to bring people together in a celebration of unity against racism. Join us on the 6th to send out that message: "Love Hull, Hate Racism!"
