11th November 2008 - HYRMC 01 at The Albemarle Music Centre Hull (1/2) (1/2), (2/2).

This piece was put together by way of a simple questionnaire being sent out to various Conference delegates. The conference was the first of its kind in Hull and was the largely put together by Hull College music tech students and Purple Worm Records' Mik Newton and Karl Martin. Responses are from Michelle Dee, Tico from R'EYA and Mike Brookebeatz music tech student, producer and re-mixer.
What was best and worst about the conference?
Michelle: The best thing throughout the whole day was the talk given by Harry Leckstein of Freeport Records/British Urban Collective. He took us from the moment you decide to form a band right through the writing recording process and on to marketing campaigns and radio playlists and retailing the finished product. His delivery was both entertaining informative and reasonably easy to understand.

The worst was the fact everything was late starting which meant some speakers were unable to lend their expertise due to other time specific responsibilities (namely Jody from The Talks' slot being over an hour after its programmed time and he having to go and teach).
This timing issue meant everything was up to an hour later than scheduled.
Tico: The best parts were the guest panel speakers and the space it was held in. The worst part was not enough interactivity, screened projections were hard to view due to lighting, heating in the space could be better regulated, too much information crammed in a very limited amount of time
Mike: Best parts I'd say was the talk from the man that created the Unsigned Guide, and also the talk about what a manager does, where he went from start to end about managing a band (Harry Leckstein)

How useful did you find the seminars?
Michelle: I found them interesting, but not necessarily useful to me personally, because they were, for the most part, aimed towards bands and artists. The most interesting piece of information came out of the morning session and that was the proposal for a medium sized council backed venue for live music.

This has been a long time coming and in this new era of co-operation and communication between the local music industry and the city council such a proposal should be fully explored. We await a full copy of the proposal from, Admin Lee, complete with aims and objectives.
Tico: Overall I am already aware of a lot of the issues that were raised during the discussions, so I saw it more as a refresher course.

Mike: Very useful, it helped me look at the music industry from a business point of view and also helped me understand more about being independent and not relying on others.

What do you think if anything, the organizers missed out on?
Michelle: It could be argued that the organizers failed to reach the female quota of the conference - the panel and all but one of the speakers were men. (I'm aware that panel member Kelly Wood from the Musicians Union sent her apologies for not attending)

Tico: Musical instrument support, demonstrations of new products, recording, mixing, mastering demos, for the home musician could be a big plus. DIY music videos for bands or emerging artists. Organizing local venue owners to participate on the panel and live music interludes for those that wanted to stay in the auditorium or short educational videos displayed on screen could be a good thing!
Mike: Was just the time given for each subject, maybe should have spread it out over a few days

Would you go to another one?
Michelle: Yes, not just for the conference content, but also to see whether suggestions for improvements had been considered and acted on.

Tico: Only if there was more interactivity to hear demos of new products or emerging technology for musicians were included as well as a weekend festival of live acts from across the region would be a big plus to attract a bigger turnout from across Yorkshire ... if handled right it could have the potential to grow next year.
