Perhaps this is where the western edifice enters the fray, the swaggering guitar the modern percussive patterns. Having received a recording of the band playing live at Metieval Fest last year in Beverley I have seen the original four musicians take an unknown crowd and whip them into a whooping whirling frenzy. Since that time Hayokee have added a didgeridoo, the instrument of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. It seems to have been a natural progression and the didgeridoo depth charges and charged rumbling sounds accompany and contrast with the other instrumentation well.

Tonight's performance sees the often heard but seldom seen Alan Raw (BBC Raw Talent) on hand drums and bodhran; an instrument made popular in 17th Century Ireland as a battle drum. There is evidence that suggests this kind of frame drum was in use in both Northern Africa, and Native American locations as well as in the Middle East; another interesting connection. Alan, appearing as a guest musician, added yet another time, place, texture and sound to the blending of the historical and musical. If that wasn't enough front man Dr Q produces a Jews harp from nowhere and begins to play the miniature instrument.

The excited crowd were dancing before long as floral prints of folk fans rubbed shoulders with the leatherjackets of heavy metal ones and foreigners from eastern Europe in between. We twirled and danced a dervish and begged for an encore so we could lose ourselves in that exotic intoxicating spiritual sound once more.

An unprecedented success that is sure to be repeated by Hayokee time and again. They have got to be favourites to play festival stages locally and next year are sure contenders for some of the bigger festivals and outdoor music events nationally.
