The second thisisUll gig of 08 promised a more organic kind of live music night. I am informed by the poets that they rarely have a fixed idea as to which pieces they will do in a set. The choices are made for them by the audience's reaction and response. Gauging the crowd and then responding there of is an important skill for every performer. Rather than talk at length about the two spoken word artists I'd just like to let you know about a related groove-some House tune.

DJ Chris Pepper of Zebra SexyElectro received a recording of the poem My Heads Gone from producer James Markham (Ernest - Fairview - Purple Worm) and did a great job on the remix. Sounding a bit like early Chemical Brothers look out for more releases from the Markham school of production. Take a listen at www.myspace.com/joehakimrecordings

Musical treats came in the form of the refreshed revitalised musicians that make up inventive storytelling DIY folk pop band The Rocky Nest and the shiny bright individualism of Hayokee, purveyors of spicy Moroccan melody interwoven with didgeridoo depth charges. The Rocky Nest are changing I said as soon as the band had finished sound check. There seems much more direction. There are songs that follow recognised forms of song structure. There seems more than a handful of differing elements coming together to create songs that stream rather than the gentle meandering of past.

This must be due in part to new members adding different influences and new thinking. Hugely creative both on and off stage, The nesters proved that in between the hours of cutting out farmyard animals for home made pastoral band flyers they have been hard at work on the music. Newish song The Good Lord Vs Sister Lovers reminds me of The Vultures track The Ballad of Sinead and Alex.
