Wednesday 20th August 08 - Tegleg Records Sponic Mesh Two CD Launch By Michelle Dee

The flyer described tonight as electro/ acid/ dubstep/ legnbass/ mashup/ techno/ breakcore/ dogstep/ glitchtronica/ mentalism and spasmodic stimulation. Not having a clue what to expect I wandered down. Diving straight in the sounds are reeling around the ceiling, a barrage balloon shake down with a hard and fast tempo. Wired and weird images of giant computing machinery, this could be Sporsmaal2 ... bleeding sci-fi beats and bass into a lattice framework, a tangled web of technological noise. Faster now we career into cavernous halls, cathedral like in my mind's construct simply dripping with echoic tone.

Was all going so well until the whoo whoo sound and the retro drop down space invaders sequence. Switch sticks to trance; broad strokes of click switch trance with bubble beat noise track. Hummer hum sound reminiscent of ambient practitioners Black Dog and that mad acid-jazz stuff that used to be played on Radio 1 late at night by Mary Anne Hobbs. Then a backbeat kicks in with over flow and fall away building cubic sounds. The square mesh on the screen looks like a radioactive Shreddie.

My original thought that I neglected to mention before...this is bedroom music that wants to be heard but people tonight are staying in their bedrooms wrapped up in duvets watching Big Brother rather than coming to a somewhat transformed Adelphi; talking of Big Brother that was Ms. Goodie on the screen just now, a snapshot from the infamous poppadom drama. A quick audience count thirty maybe thirty-one peeps in the room.

CDs are on sale, Sponic Mesh Two. Here's a hot band tip given me by Paul White a band by the name of Efterklang, sounds good so I'll leave you the link when I'm done here.

Sounds like a deep-sided metallic plate reverberating against vulcanized rubber and a meld of wob wob sounds penetrate the Adelphi walls. This is Dan dxn and a sound I'm describing as drum n bass for veggies; all the meat and bones have been removed. An artist called Tom is doing visuals and there follows an intense, close-up filmic study of baseball bat smashing into a tv screen, set against a dilapidated landscape with the occasional canine clip, in glorious black and white. This was mighty fine work, with sound and image coming together with precision and craftsmanship.

endoflevelbaddie headlined, I stopped writing and started listening. Soon after he was joined by MC Dalippiyippie and I danced with a crowd of funky guys and galls and lost myself in an explosion of motion and vocal licks. It was a special night, a rare halcyon night, those that were there will know... those that were not, well there'll be another time for you. Experimental, eclectic and ecstatic would be apt words to sum up the night.
