Saturday 17th March 07 - Turismo and The Johnsons at Yo-Yo at The Welly Club (1/2)

Down the front, groups of regulars from Tuesday's Sesh night dance to the Johnsons' opening number.
Among friends, I take my place stopping to greet DJ Priya and her right hand man Kristian.
It is St. Patrick's Day so I'm not sure what kind of crowd we're likely to get.
|
|
As it is the room quickly starts filling from the back and what was an open space
before the band gets rapidly filled with lads and lasses bouncing to Missfortunate Love.
Danny (rhythm guitar) switches to an acoustic and the band play one of the newer song Old Friend.
|
Talking about guitars, there seemed to be a few issues with sound tonight, I don't know what
was wrong but at times the guitar sounds didn't come across as well as they could.
Also Matt's vocal didn't have it's usual clarity given that The Johnsons played a fine
set and created a fine atmosphere at the Welly.
There's lots of feel good factor in the room as new guitarist Ben leaves the stage and
plays amongst the very real mosh pit that is forming all around.
There are new guitar sequences to enjoy on the classic dirty ballad Gina tonight
featuring a staggered style voicing technique.
|
|
|
Young Will, a shock-haired scamp if ever there was one, braces and badges jumps on
stage to help Matt with the chorus on One More Night.
Listening to the newer material I hear chunky guitar on Pocket Cock a cheeky new song
that sees The Johnsons taking their sound up a gear.
This was probably one of the best Johnsons gigs ever, maybe not sound-wise but for
the sheer enjoyment and excitement of the local crowd it was a winner.
|
|
Talking to Ben after the gig he tells me that the band has been going down a storm in
Leeds recently and the buzz around the gig is growing by the day. Look out for
The Johnsons appearing live on BBC's Raw Talent on April 1st 7pm -10pm.

Turismo and the tortoise-shell shades...
Tonight I wanted to answer two questions those were: Do the local bands have the
capacity to bring in a good crowd and are our bands as good as the touring bands we
have had playing in Hull of late.
Answer to the first question is yes.
The crowd tonight is filled with a colourful mix of band members and live music fans.
Everyone seems to know everybody else and the atmosphere is open, warm and friendly.
The answer to the second is laid out below.

Welly's packed tonight already as Dance Bastards hit the stage with their refreshing
brand of dirty electronic rap with a catchy bass that's to die for.
These two gorgeous girls are hypnotising the crowd not only with their sassy moves and
wrap around skirts, but with serious attitude from lead singer Kate who positively
screams girl power (way overdue!)

No-one gives a crap about Your Codename Is: Milo as the crowd are buzzing with electricity
because they're itching for Enter Shikari and the mosh pits prepare themselves to mosh the
place into the ground with sweaty pent up energy.
The lights go out, the screams begin, they chant Shikari! in unison and with all the glow
sticks flying around it looks more like an

Music Reviews - Thursday 8th March 07 - Franks E.P. Launch at The Adelphi with support From Lavellion By Michelle Dee Photos by Mo

I came into Adelphi still shaking my hair from the rain on a rather damp Thursday evening.
By the time I'd reached the bar I was shaking my thang to the cool metal outfit on stage.
Theirs was a name I'd heard being bandied about on Myspaz and seen on a couple of flyers.
I sat down with a pint of Deuchars and listened to the rowdy ear churning guitar and eye

Music Reviews - Paparazzi Whore at Club NME at The Welly, Hull By Becky Martin

Welly in Hull's been around for a few years and through all the eyeliner, exaggerated hair,
skinny jeans and beer soaked t-shirts, it's seen enough emo bands, trashed dressing rooms and drunk indie guys to last a lifetime, but tonight was special as Paparazzi Whore took over the stage and set the place alight!
Bass driven??? Man! The speakers made

The band kick off the set with Plan A, Gerry on both vocals and keyboard for this one.
Rick, bass player, has now firmly established himself within the band with some pretty good
riffs it seems like he's always been there.
This song has slightly electro-pop undertones and wraps around you like a warm welcome.
Gerry announces a new

It's cold, wet and windy there's sharks on the TV but there's two new bands at
The Lamp in Hull. Sadly Ghosts cancelled last minute so that leaves us with the
shimmering Indie sounds of Manchester's Snowfight In The City Centre and
headliners Air Traffic, the piano soaked Indie band it's okay to like.
The former a six piece from Manchester

Music Reviews - Thursday The Sounds and Avangaard at The Welly Club By Becky Martin
Photographs by Kate Langan
|
|
It's Thursday night at Welly and that can only mean one thing ... yep that's right, cue the emo girls! The buzzing crowd's full of mascara, skinny jeans, even tighter tights, and hair with some serious curling iron action going on, with the odd floating Mohican thrown in too, and it's all for this very special night with The Sounds.
All the pain of waxing, painting and

Music Reviews - Thursday December 14th 06 - The Dirty Dreamers, The Johnsons and The Blueprints at New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee and Rachel
|
|
The unique scent and sounds of the Adelphi beckoned us for a hot date with The Dirty Dreamers and The Johnsons. When we arrived at the club openers The Blueprints had just started; hurrying in and after purchasing drinks we made our way down the front. First impressions of the out of town act from York were good.
They seemed

Sheffield By Julia Grant Photographs by Kate Langan

The rumours had been circulating for a fair few weeks now that this current tour aka "The GrapplingTour" was to be the band's last ever and Saturday night in Sheffield was the last date of that tour.
It all kicked of well with fantastic support from Badly Drawn Boy.
There were some familiar tracks but the crowd struggled to get into it as the majority of songs
