The country is ripe for a ska revival with more and more bands flirting with different instrumentation and feeling a need to break out of the foot stamping guitar led sound of the last two years. The Talks have wide appeal; the youngsters looking for something different to the usual indie sounds and the older lot on a nostalgia trip. My only gripe would be that the set felt too short but for a band that only came about July 2006 they have certainly proved the kick in the rear that the Hull scene needed.

|
|
So to the main attraction, and the reason why people paid a tenner to get in tonight.
|
|
Neville Staples slides on to the stage and the hands go up in the air. Two straight men guitar and bass cool cats heads cocked sporting shades join him down the front and Pat from The Talks takes his place behind the drum kit. I can't list all the songs but I can tell you that the place was kicking. Neville skanking to the rolling keys of Monkey Man set the audience of again jumping singing along, punk kids, skinheads, boys, girls, singles and couples side by side; united.
The powerful ska based music that came out of Coventry, brought the blacks and whites together during the dark days of the late seventies. The multiracial ethos was reflected in the 2-Tone movement and by the label 2 Tone Records the brainchild of keys man Jerry Dammers.
|
The Specials and The Selecter pushed the 2-Tone sound and created a short lived phenomenon that reverberated throughout he country. After 1980 the ska explosion began to waver and The Specials split. Dammers started using the name Specials A.K.A with an ever shifting band line up. Neville, a roadie at the time, joined the group as vocalist after the band had heard him toasting (a fast patois rap prevalent in dub reggae) over the songs during sound check.
Back to the Ballroom: A bright brilliant burst of horn heralds the song Simmer Down and lights the fire in the hearts of the people. Neville comes right to the front of the stage and hands reach out to the electrifying ska man. You're gonna make me work tonight he calls out, removing his shirt.
|
|
|
Feverish bass and brass combos play out and the temperature rises. Ringing dangerous guitar sounds evoke the gangs of the early eighties. Fight talk and gun talk as Pat on drums turns up the tempo once more and the crowd respond by having right old knees up with Nev.
Tension mounts as Neville screams out for the sound guy to get more out of his mic monitors. He starts a well rehearsed verbal assault on the sound engineer explaining he can't move about and sing if he can't hear himself. This announcement stirs the crowd further and they sing all the more loudly to Rat Race and Too Much Too Young.

Music Reviews - 25th September 06 Sleepers Acoustic Night With AfterGlow By Michelle Dee
|
|
I just spent a very enjoyable evening in the pub Sleepers
on Newland Avenue; just the other side of the railway bridge.
First of all I drank a pint of Caffreys Cold.
Now any connoisseur will know how good it is to start a night with a Caffreys.
The cold just makes it that little bit better.
Next I believe was the wheat based beer similar to Hoegaarden.

interview with new band The Neat. Having seen the post punk outfit supporting

As we slowly made our way to Pearson Park dragging our tired limbs behind us from a
drunken night at Spiders, we emerge in the middle of the Hull Mela 06,
a celebration of Hull's cultural diversity and acceptance of an alternative
lifestyle, with its catchphrase of bring nothing but an open mind.
The grassroots-style venue is a huge mixing pot of different cultures, foods,

The crowd's full of teeny-bopper emos and hardcore metal fans tonight in a glorious mixture of piercings,
tattoos and spiky mohicans, as Stop It You're Killing Me kick off the rock night with their own
brand of heavy guitars, energetic drums, and screechy vocals.
The hot female bass player weaves in her own soft vocals towards the end of their set earning
them a great reception

Music Reviews - 22nd September 06 - Tonik The Shine and AfterGlow at The New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee Photos By Mo

Tonight is a night for Cilla to have a blow out; god knows she of all people deserves one.
We arrive in a very wet Adelphi car park where great puddles make the footing precarious and
more than one person ended up ankle deep in cold, muddy water.
Perhaps some kindly building contractor might dump half a ton of aggregate on the car park
next time they pass.

Its blisteringly hot the air cons knackered there are young louts on stage
pretending to be bad ass gangstas from da Bronx with little or nothing to say.
They go on about being open to ideas, accepting everyone for what they are and
being free doing what you do, but it is all bullshit.
Judging by the racket they were making in the corridor whilst the visiting

Music Reviews - Leeds Festival - Part One By Joe Hakim Photos By Stuart Mountain and Mak

My mates decided to throw a party the night before we were due to set off for Leeds. I initially thought about taking it easy, but the alcohol began to flow and before I knew it I was as pissed as a fart. Some of my mates went outside to have a game of football in the street, so I necked a half and sat on the windowsill and watched them play.
Unfortunately,

Music Reviews - Wednesday 23rd August 06 - Analogue Consumption Quick To the Observatory and The Clauberg Opera at the New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee - NEW Photo Gallery by Tim Sinister

Tonight was a night of firsts, three of them to be exact.
The First "first" was Analogue Consumption's debut; a progressive three
piece with heavy New Order influences.
The bass driven sound was pleasingly at odds with the low key vocal
style of the charismatic front man.
Those around me said it reminded them of someone; that muted vocal style

Sat naked now, I write this appraisal of tonight's eventful triple header.
