Wednesday 27th June 07 - Maul and Reign Of Chaos and Mechanical Breeding at Ringside By Ian Johansson Reign of Chaos Photos by JWA Photography

This was one night that shouldn't have been missed. It was one of the biggest nights I had seen at Ringside in my two years of living in Hull and attending a lot of local gigs. The night kicked off a bit late but the atmosphere strong and tense, the first band up was a band named Mechanical Breeding. The guitarist was possibly the only decent member in the band, the singing was kept to a minimum and was very poor. The drumming was also very poor and simple and much more could have been done to make their set much better.

Next up was Mactavilis, however after doing some research I have come to understand they have changed their name to Reign Of Chaos. This band looked brilliant. They had the right look, it wasn't a group of wannabes who was trying to be like any other band out there this band meant something.

Now, I'm not too much of a fan of Screaming Vocals but Reign Of Chaos made it work and with their great harmonising and catchy riffs. Even I had trouble trying not to bash my head around a bit, but I decided to sit near the bar and continue to watch. This was the first time I had ever seen or heard of this band but they are one band to keep an eye on in Hull.

The drumming was down to a tee and the bassist got into the audience which really brought the crowd more alive however I do vaguely remember at one point he got so into getting the audience to move he forgot his bass solo! But the band laughed it off and managed to carry on their song. These guys, in my eyes, really seem to spell out Stars. They have every aspect of a great band in my eyes and I definitely think this is one band that makes Hull proud.

After a bit of a break Maul were up. These guys were also brilliant; with only one guitarist they had quite a unique sound. I thought at first the fact that they had two singers was a bit strange but they guys pulled it off. The bassist wasn't seen too much and was more at the back of the group but the drummer was fast and looked like he had a fair few years of experience behind him.

They kept the crowd entertained between their songs to make up the time due to them only having around 8 songs. I was surprised at the sound one of their singers got out of his voice - it was the main thing that made the band as unique as they sounded. I think over time this could too be one great band.

I have done some research into the 3 bands and their Myspace addresses are below. The only band that I could find gig dates for were Reign Of Chaos which can be found on their Myspace and they are also entered for a battle of the bands which is at Ringside and starts in August.
