Cross Genre Genius
By Michelle Dee
|
In a bare front room off Spring Bank, vibrant faces from places party
in the dawning light. DJs from out of town and local have been spinning
the plastic close to twelve hours.
Among all those different styles, genres and personalities one
two hour set stood out for me, shouting let me be heard.
Dave has been spinning and mixing tunes for near on three years.
Before he was in Hull he could be regularly heard playing the sweetest
techno breaks at Antiquorama in Guernsey.
|
|
|
A guy slides in transfixed by the beats and starts discussing the merits of
speed garage. Underneath the animated talk StoneBridge,
Put 'Em High comes in pure and clear with treble breaks and samples.
It's the kind of beat that goes straight from your soul to your feet.
I'm dancing and listening into the choon talk when he drops Daft Punk and
Technologic.
Expert fingers move rapidly from the turntables to the console switching the
discs altering the tempo, fading and bringing in Faith Goes Running on
Juno Records into Playgroup.
|
It's a twisted Faithless style mash up with an emphasis on vocals and
deep droning sounds which is as catchy as fuck.
Shapely sirens weave in and out of thick bass beats and I'm kicking it
big style. My hands find the air, hips swaying, as more people wander
in and out of the bare front room checking out the funky shit this guy is playing.
Top of the tree! We take it higher and higher.
It's so good I have to go find people who are chilling in the garden and
bring them inside to listen.
|
|
|
Dave, originally from Wigan, now resides here in Hull and he is looking for a few
club nights to take his own style of tune-age to the techno/dance devotees of this city.
He fulfils his burning passion to spin the best discs and moves subtly to heavier
beats...oh so gently bass beats cut in packed with promise.
Some music connoisseur has taken Fleetwood Mac's heavenly tune Everywhere
and created a sublime groove and when the opening line reverberates through
the house I'm transported to Elysium.
|
|
I want this moment to last but as night turns to day we slide steadily into
pop fused R & B from this cross genre genius.
A final slice of deep house blows up a storm to conclude a wicked set.
