Monday 2nd July Amy Macdonald at The Lamp Hull By Michelle Dee

Monday night I went to see Amy Macdonald www.myspace.com/amymacdonald at the lamp in Hull. She came recommended to me by a good friend but I hadn't actually heard anything by the Glaswegian singer/songwriter signed to Melodramatic Records. Now I can't stop singing the gloriously catchy Mr. Rock & Roll her new single out July 16th She played to a reasonably large Monday night crowd who responded favourably to her songs. Although small in stature Amy draws the audience in with her powerful voice rich and velvety.

Songs to look out for are This Is Your Life also the title of her debut album out on July 30th Then Poison Prince that paints pictures of the life of troubled artist Pete Doherty who Amy confesses to having an enthralment for. I note she is wearing a small white plastic crucifix popular with the Babyshambles singer.

She continues her observations of popular culture with songs like Youth of Today and Footballers Wife. The latter contrasting the faux glamour of today's TV celebrity culture- Jade Goody et al - with the shining stars of yesteryear like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Road To Home and Rock Bottom once more show off her rich tone; a deep alto vocal that rises and falls, at times bordering on the Celtic folk tradition. She surprises with an okay rendition of The Killers anthem Mr. Brightside, once more showing her love for the rock n roll world.

After the ten song set the crowd more animated and spirited shouted for an encore. Amy left them wanting more.
