Saturday 19th May Great Green Concert Featuring cowfisH, Talamasca and Shindigg At Beverley Green Fair (2/3)
Words and Photos by Michelle Dee |
(1/3),
(2/3),
(3/3).
|
|
And so, reader to cowfisH
www.myspace.com/cowfishpearls,
a name you may remember from 2004 when they were placed second to Shindigg at the Best Original Band
competition Springhead Pub in Hull. By looking at the band’s recently created (now multi-award winning)
website
www.cowfish.me.org you will observe that the band have had a number of
different members pass through their doors since they began.
|
|
|
With the latest line up they have lost a lot of the lighter side to their music that oft got them the label of being a folk band.
Eagle eyed readers will know that Simon and I have already coined the term trig rock to describe the new configuration and
direction.
The band open with the reworked Rat Song then its lights, camera, action as cowfisH they have that extra ingredient, that
magic which allows you for the duration of the set, to forget who you are and lose yourself in their world.
Where I’ve Been and Time part 2 follow and I tell you, you’ve never seen a band have more fun on stage.
|
You can’t talk about cowfisH and not mention the amazing guitar styles of Mike Allen. Since he began playing with the band they
have undergone a radical change. Mikes medium is space. Space, to express the guitar and the sounds it makes in the most dramatic
and eye-catching way.
He is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most thrilling guitarist I’ve seen since starting to write about music in 2003.
He plays like a dream and moves like he’s on fire. He fires up the rest of the band, the crowd, everyone. He brings back
the athleticism, the glamour, the vitality of guitar men from rock n roll years gone by.
|
|
|
In one amazing set he gave us the duck walk popularised by Chuck Berry, the high knees of the Jimmy Page strut,
the grind, the Irish jig and Elvis legs.
During one song he stands back to back with front-man Tim O’Connor heads
on each others shoulders in a move I have dubbed the Diamond Back due to the striking shape created.
Guitar leaps and bounds pour on and off the stage – at the start of one number he jumps off the front of the stage, runs up the
bleachers into the seated audience sans guitar.
|
I‘m told that Tim was terrified when Mike appeared thirty seconds later, a body forming out of the smoke, running at break neck
speed towards him, undertaking a death defying leap back onto the stage then mid-song picked up guitar, swung round made his
cue and opened with a flamboyant Townshend wheel.
The jump was either incredible or foolhardy or incredibly foolhardy, I was feet away and saw how close to injury he really was;
inches away from kicking a pint glass over, crashing into the monitors, tripping on the leads and less then a toe hold on
the edge to propel himself forward.
|
|
|
These songs are well crafted, potent, intelligent rock songs, coming at possibly the most exciting period of cowfisH’s history.
The newer material such as Pornography, Harder Faster and Second Coming suggest a more rakish side to the band.
Having lost the female vocalist, some years before, the songs are now more raunchy perhaps, more edgy certainly, but maintain the degree
of subtlety within the lyrics.

Down the front, groups of regulars from Tuesday's Sesh night dance to the Johnsons' opening number.
Among friends, I take my place stopping to greet DJ Priya and her right hand man Kristian.
It is St. Patrick's Day so I'm not sure what kind of crowd we're likely to get.
As it is the room quickly starts filling from the back and what was an open space

Welly's packed tonight already as Dance Bastards hit the stage with their refreshing
brand of dirty electronic rap with a catchy bass that's to die for.
These two gorgeous girls are hypnotising the crowd not only with their sassy moves and
wrap around skirts, but with serious attitude from lead singer Kate who positively
screams girl power (way overdue!)

No-one gives a crap about Your Codename Is: Milo as the crowd are buzzing with electricity
because they're itching for Enter Shikari and the mosh pits prepare themselves to mosh the
place into the ground with sweaty pent up energy.
The lights go out, the screams begin, they chant Shikari! in unison and with all the glow
sticks flying around it looks more like an

Music Reviews - Thursday 8th March 07 - Franks E.P. Launch at The Adelphi with support From Lavellion By Michelle Dee Photos by Mo
|
|
I came into Adelphi still shaking my hair from the rain on a rather damp Thursday evening.
By the time I'd reached the bar I was shaking my thang to the cool metal outfit on stage.
Theirs was a name I'd heard being bandied about on Myspaz and seen on a couple of flyers.
I sat down with a pint of Deuchars and listened to the rowdy ear churning guitar and eye

Music Reviews - Paparazzi Whore at Club NME at The Welly, Hull By Becky Martin

Welly in Hull's been around for a few years and through all the eyeliner, exaggerated hair,
skinny jeans and beer soaked t-shirts, it's seen enough emo bands, trashed dressing rooms and drunk indie guys to last a lifetime, but tonight was special as Paparazzi Whore took over the stage and set the place alight!
Bass driven??? Man! The speakers made

The band kick off the set with Plan A, Gerry on both vocals and keyboard for this one.
Rick, bass player, has now firmly established himself within the band with some pretty good
riffs it seems like he's always been there.
This song has slightly electro-pop undertones and wraps around you like a warm welcome.

It's cold, wet and windy there's sharks on the TV but there's two new bands at
The Lamp in Hull. Sadly Ghosts cancelled last minute so that leaves us with the
shimmering Indie sounds of Manchester's Snowfight In The City Centre and
headliners Air Traffic, the piano soaked Indie band it's okay to like.
The former a six piece from Manchester

It's Thursday night at Welly and that can only mean one thing ... yep that's right, cue the emo girls! The buzzing crowd's full of mascara, skinny jeans, even tighter tights, and hair with some serious curling iron action going on, with the odd floating Mohican thrown in too, and it's all for this very special night with The Sounds.

Music Reviews - Thursday December 14th 06 - The Dirty Dreamers, The Johnsons and The Blueprints at New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee and Rachel

The unique scent and sounds of the Adelphi beckoned us for a hot date with The Dirty Dreamers and The Johnsons. When we arrived at the club openers The Blueprints had just started; hurrying in and after purchasing drinks we made our way down the front. First impressions of the out of town act from York were good.

I was pretty impressed with the sight of 15 songs on the set list although only 14 of
them were performed you felt like you were getting the most out of them.
Each song was explosive with heavy drums and thrashing guitars, they made me think of
The Clash and more recently The Paddingtons which he made reference to later on.
I couldn't always catch what

Music Reviews - Friday 8th December 06 - Bliszko at Dempseys, Cardiff By Marianne Fox

When you look at the three members of Bliszko you don't know what to expect.
Their image doesn't give anything away which adds to the charm of this ambiguous three piece.
As soon as their set is underway you realise why ... it isn't like anything else on the scene,
and you realise this pioneering band don't seem to know how special they are.
