In the evening after the majority of stalls and stands had been taken down at the Green Fair in Beverley, the Great Green Concert took place. It was held in the darkened confines of the auditorium in Longcroft School between 8pm and 10.30. The audience who'd travelled from York/Hull and the surrounding area were treated to some top class music from three of the finest bands around.

Hull based four-piece Shindigg www.myspace.com/shindiggband began the night in impressive style, if you’d closed your eyes for a second as the opening chords rang out you could have almost imagine the band playing at a huge stadium. They looked and sounded every bit the stadium rockers as they played a varied set of old and new original songs. Powerful guitar and bass lines drive the darkly themed lyrics combined with infectious rhythms and melodic to metal style vocals.

New song Ann stands out and has the now familiar rocking out bass style from Dr. Mike. Look out for the unusual two finger technique. The band are soon to go back into the studio to record a new four track E.P, a follow up to the popular Cherrytree E.P. As the whistles, cheers and applause died down at the close of the set, some trooped to the bar while others stepped outside in the cool evening air to wait for the stage change over for the next band. Big shout to Mad Mike (bass and vocals) whose birthday it was the following day and to the rest of Shindigg; Bekki (drums), Maggie (Guitar) and Tommo (Vocals and Guitar)

Talamasca from York and Beverley exploded on to the auditorium stage and blew the crowd away with riffing magic, gruff growling vocals and cannon fire percussion. I saw this band two years ago in Hull (click here to read the review) and I was fairly impressed then. That night they’d played a mix of original stuff and covers on the old White Room stage in the industrial area of the city. Tonight however, no cramped conditions no covers, tonight they play on a large stage with elevated drum riser, big speakers, laser beam spots and misty clouds of smoke.

Gore on bass and vocals, G on drums and Stig on guitar and vocals do heavy ass songs about, serial killers, the sea, and insanity. Pacy belters delivered with consummate style, by the imposing bearded front man Stig and the quick fingered Gore. Its old style metal and its heavy, it’s deafening and it rocks. The crowd whoop and yell at the end of each number and Talamasca deliver more and more ball-crunchingly heavy numbers. The finger tapping technique is evident once more as Stig delivers noisy top end thrills.

From time to time strange people get up and mosh; arms, legs, heads flail in time to the roar from the stage. With sweat dripping from every pore, I jump and bounce shaking my recently shorn head. Gore demanded his favourite dancer and after some persuading had leapt down to bust some great moves, by the front of the stage. Inspired by Talamasca’s playing, I find energy reserves that were impossible to tap into just an hour or so earlier. After the last song once more the crowds cheered and yelled then refilled drinks, waiting in the cool night air.

The band recently finished a marathon session at Zenith Studios in Hull recording their latest album in 21hrs.
