Friday 23rd March 07 Superscape And The Painted Sambas at The Adelphi

Superscape have been around for many years in fact they were one of the very first bands to appear on this site.

They dropped out of the gigging scene a while back, since then they have done the occasional gig usually at the Adelphi. Now they are having another go with two new members and a different sound.
First though, were one of the few original bands hailing from East Hull. The Painted Sambas take their name from the trainers they used to wear. The band got together in 2005 and started gigging late 2006.

Tonight was their fifth gig having previously played in Huddersfield and Josephs Well in Leeds. The Adelphi is fairly packed with a lively East Hull crowd. Most have come to see and hear the pop-tinged guitar heavy melodic rock that this emerging band play.

The band comprise of Jarrod on vocals, Saggy on lead guitar, Martyn on bass and Leroy on drums. The treble guitar on the opening number gets the crowd going. Smooth energized rock with an emphasis on multi textured tones and eye catching guitar from Saggy.

The vocals don't always work with the bluesy elements.
A slight echo of retro rock with sing along lyrics taps into something in this crowd.
By the end of the first three numbers we've had dancing down the front and all kinds of mayhem.

Come On Brother is the best song so far, with a country/folk flavoured mid section, then later kicks off with style. The next has far more of a T.Rex feel with dark Floyd elements hanging over a militaristic drum beat.

The beefy intro falls away into half and full chord sequences that bleed into each other. As the song progresses these ringing sequences fill out to a big drum finish. The audience is loving every moment and it's easy to see why.
Saggy on guitar is stealing the show pulling chords and making good use of sound effects. The last number is a bit of an epic in which the band combine the tracks We Only Danced and Theme from Painted Sambas.

They jam with the melody adding hooks and play around with the two numbers until the final note. Calls for an encore and crazier dancing follow the band off stage.
Look out for these guys I imagine they are going to get very popular, very quickly.
This is the second gig featuring the new Superscape drummer Richie Rees and bassist Adam "Paz" Parrish. The band have a new sound that at times is almost Killers-esque.

Floaty balearic guitars from Tall Paul backing Glen's soaring vocals. More melodic Indie rock pours forth with flourishes of frenzied guitar work. The first half of the set has a contemporary Indie feel.
Where as the second half gives way to the more psychedelic sound. The last song sees Rob Stott hacking at his guitar strings with a violin bow. On his knees he creates a powerful sound then lays the guitar and bow to rest.

The set tonight seems rather short and I can't help feel that we didn't see the best Superscape tonight. The new members are adding their own personalities and influences and changing the old Superscape sound.

Music Reviews - Saturday 17th March 07 - Turismo and The Johnsons at Yo-Yo at The Welly Club By Michelle Dee Turismo Photos by Rob Cranmer, Johnsons Photos by Gareth Jones
Down the front, groups of regulars from Tuesday's Sesh night dance to the Johnsons' opening number. Among friends, I take my place stopping to greet DJ Priya and her right hand man Kristian. It is St. Patrick's Day so I'm not sure what kind of crowd we're likely to get. As it is the room quickly starts filling from the back and what was an open space before the Read more...

No-one gives a crap about Your Codename Is: Milo as the crowd are buzzing with electricity because they're itching for Enter Shikari and the mosh pits prepare themselves to mosh the place into the ground with sweaty pent up energy. Music Reviews - Thursday 8th March 07 - Franks E.P. Launch at The Adelphi with support From Lavellion By Michelle Dee Photos by Mo
I came into Adelphi still shaking my hair from the rain on a rather damp Thursday evening. By the time I'd reached the bar I was shaking my thang to the cool metal outfit on stage. Theirs was a name I'd heard being bandied about on Myspaz and seen on a couple of flyers. I sat down with a pint of Deuchars and listened to the rowdy ear churning guitar and eye Read more...

Welly in Hull's been around for a few years and through all the eyeliner, exaggerated hair, skinny jeans and beer soaked t-shirts, it's seen enough emo bands, trashed dressing rooms and drunk indie guys to last a lifetime, but tonight was special as Paparazzi Whore took over the stage and set the place alight! Bass driven??? Man! The speakers made Read more...

It's Thursday night at Welly and that can only mean one thing ... yep that's right, cue the emo girls! Music Reviews - Tuesday 4th December 06 - The Sesh Featuring The Landaus, Tarifa and The Drainpipes (Manchester) By Rachel Photographs By Michelle Dee
I was pretty impressed with the sight of 15 songs on the set list although only 14 of them were performed you felt like you were getting the most out of them. Each song was explosive with heavy drums and thrashing guitars, they made me think of The Clash and more recently The Paddingtons which he made reference to later on. I couldn't always catch what Read more...
