It's Friday night. It's the end of the month and despite GST Cardinals getting discombobulated over which month they were playing, ThisisUll Live is showcasing two very fine bands and a bit of spoken word, verse and vibe down the Adelphi.

As is now customary at ThisisUll Live shows I got up on stage to welcome the crowd and introduce the acts.

Describing Riley and the Mumps as very, very good (I was nervous I couldn't find more expressive words), a cheer goes up, then I just utter Kill...Surf...City and the Adelphi roars back in appreciation. By way of a change, I opened the night with some original verse of which Frankie and Prickly was the clear favourite. I got laughs (in the right places), shouts of encouragement and warm applause as I stood on stage, sharing my words with you. I'd just like to say a big thanks to all of you who came down tonight. Your support gives us a vote of confidence for what we try to do.

Then it was Riley and the Mumps (RATM) not intentionally similar in name to clothes shedding US heavy rock outfit I am told. I was confident they'd deliver and they didn't disappoint one iota. There was a few floor burners where I danced and jumped about to there youthful exuberant style. RATM impressed a lot of people tonight including grabbing KSC's attention (which can only serve to further their cause).

If this was RATM having a mare technically, as was claimed later in the night, then no Hull bands should sleep soundly in their beds again.

The crowd appreciated their set and gave them a bloody good reception. There's a mix of styles and looks: from the dapper front man, sliding in with the bearing of Alex Kapranos. Top notch percussion and hardcore hair swinging bass, combining with hang out lets have a party guitar riffs. You take a definitive look, a new twist on a classic model and have an exhilarating band to watch.

They show potential, a lot of potential and given a few opportunities and a bigger stage they'll surprise a lot of people. Take note Riley and the Mumps are stepping up and making some damn fine sounds.
