Tight? They have to be to seamlessly cross through electronica experimentalism through indie punk to briefly flirt with electro techno eclecticism. After the last song with its robotic vocalisations and multi layered sci-fi filmic forms I was lucky enough to get a few words with Aidan from the band. I started by asking him how he felt the band had gone down with the Adelphi crowd? 'Really good - we like it here,' like last weeks band they were not used to playing for people that were seated and more reserved than their other audiences but Aidan said he got the impression that people really got into it.

'Good to have an open mic night like this having young people getting up and doing songs. Open Mic nights like these feature in our own musical background back in New Zealand'.

I asked him about the scene in his hometown, Wellington (New Zealand's capital city) He described it as a good environment for musicians to grow seeing that the country is very small, with a small population. Also the community is tight knit and it is reasonably easy to get known at all the major town s in the country. There's an emphasis on building networks not just between the musicians but with promoters, venues, media and within the wider music industry.

Aidan told me of a few New Zealand artists doing really well in particular a one man synth band called Disasteradio and a duo called Frase+Bri who rewire Commodore 64s to create arcade dance music incorporating acoustic folk. I asked whether electronica dominated the Kiwi sound at the moment but he explained that New Zealand was just like any other place with a generous mix of rock and guitar based bands, folk, punk as well as the electro variety; 'everything is there but on a much smaller scale'.

'There's something very special about having a smaller community to work with, also helpful if you need a place to stay after a show'. Not that SosoModern are insular. I learn that this is their second tour, previously having toured the U.S. including the highly prized SbySW festival in Texas, Germany and the U.K., including the Fandango Festival. They are hoping to play more U.K. festival dates next year but for now are booked up until December. SosoModern release four limited edition 7inch singles on Transgressive Records from 24th September. Buy the seven track E.P. at live shows.
