Everyone anticipated a busy night. Both Steve Fulsham and Meg Williams are very popular bands in these heats. The Gig Shop team flew in hot from a sound engineering course in Liverpool run by none other than 'Big Mick' Hughes who has done a massive 1340 gigs for Metallica. ('Glutton' and 'punishment' spring to mind). Also engineers from Scissor Sisters, Texas and a stack of other big award winning names. How the other half live - these guys don't even plug in their own mics!!.

They agreed we couldn't teach them anything - or was it the other way round!! Suffice to say that the Gig Shop is now the best trained sound team in Humberside!!!! Back to the heat - we were treated to a very civilized but enthusiastic crowd who heckled Mr Blake in his now legendary stand up comedy routine. Didn't get 'joke of the week' sorry! It's good to see a number of bands in checking out the competition!!

We were pleased to hear from a very young band from Grimsby called Overdive featuring Karl Joensen on lead guitar, vocals and harmonica, who is a wiz on the effects. At the back is a great drummer -Andy Carlile, backed up by 'Arnie Swartzenegger' on bass - I just love the distorted lead he plays on the last song (he is really Ryan Dumelow) and takes his job very seriously!. They really do make excellent music and would be great as support to an established local band - they are keen to play in Hull, being the centre of the music universe. So all offers, please...

Second on were a very talented and well established Hull band. Steve can no longer spell his own name - it has been mis-spelt so many times he has adopted Fulsham! A lot of talent here - voted 'Man-of-the-Match' and a great pair of jeans, Steve - one of the hecklers (all of whom came from a famous local band the SODS) offered him a new pair. Thanks Kipper! The musicianship was brilliant as we would expect from Mike Baker on drums, Pete Kerridge on bass and BVs and Steve on guitar and lead vocals. Mike has the best sounding kick drum this side of anywhere!!! Poor Peter's bass got the gremlins on the first song but they are such good musicians that this didn't detract at all from a thoroughly professional blues/rock set.

The third set was admirably filled by the amazing Meg Williams Band who were winners of the heat. At last - a lady brave enough to front a band and writing some really interesting rock ballads too. Meg also sings, plays keyboards, violin and guitar. She was complemented on vocals by a young lady, also with a great voice, who I'm afraid didn't give her name! A very popular and talented guitar player -Dave Suddaby filled in with some stunning riffs. Tony Walters on bass and the delightful Rosey on drums filled the backline superbly. I have to say that Rosey did get a bit enthusiastic on his cymbals at times, but who am I to say!!

Voting was very close between Steve Fulsham (156) and Meg Williams (168) with Overdive receiving a respectable 119 Check out thisisull.com, who sent a brave reporter!! and Hull Rocks www.hullrocks.tk too. Thank you to the judges - Dez, Carl and Simon for coping with a very difficult choice A very big thank you also to Gary from Audio Design Studios on Beverley Road for setting up the system for us - great job.
