The Somatics - Elemental (Engine Room) Reviewed By Steve Rudd Release date: 27th February 2006.

After the sad demise of cult heroes Ultrasound, ace guitarist Richard Green wasted no time in forming the Leeds-based trio The Somatics. Thus, we have Richard on lead vocals and guitar, backed up by bassist Stephanie and drummer Bruce. This single was also recorded and produced by Richard, to further prove just how talented he is both in front of and behind the studio desk. The sound of The Somatics is hugely exhilarating, and one of the primary reasons for this is the band's pursuit of the perfect analogue sound.

Mix such a sound with some bewitching melodies and heavenly harmonies, and the resultant sound is both sweeping and majestic - and genuinely in a league of its own. With an LP on its way (by the name of Dynamo Mercurial), this single is an ideal appetite-whetter for grander things to come, with Elemental - which is the lead track - heaving with retro Classic Rock vibes stylishly surging over Richard's extraordinary vocals that include the classic line You've touched me in ways I've never ever touched myself.

The Cool Wet Grass b-side isn't quite as mind-blowing in its epic scope, but nevertheless it is strangely compelling and catchy come the whisper of its choral chant.

You Promised Me, meanwhile, hears both Richard's and Stephanie's voices perfectly in tune with each other, yet while their voices might be soaring there is an underlying benevolence and dark moodiness branded into the music which simply serves to make it even more interesting. In theory then, given Richard Green's ongoing talent for writing truly amazing songs, this band in The Somatics deserves its big break with Elemental, so why don't you grant them that much by buying this beauty?... www.the-somatics.com
