The Fallout Trust - Before The Light Goes (At Large) Reviewed By Steve Rudd

Pin back your ears, one and all, and listen hard. Busting out of an East London warehouse, here the nation has a band in The Fallout Trust to be proud of. They are making thoroughly exciting music, and hopefully they'll break into the big-time during 2006. Before The Light Goes is their second single, developing as it does from its groovy mid-paced beginnings and chilled-out vibes, through an achingly beautiful and somewhat tormented chorus or two, towards a most thrilling climax.

The sound of The Fallout Trust is immense. Such a 'sound' is neither particularly hard or fast, nor loud or lewd. This band manages to captivate the listener by being bold with the stylish way in which they write their songs, structuring this tune so that it really does go somewhere, literally moving the listener right through an exhilarating gauntlet of emotions, as Joe Winter's versatile vocals narrate proceedings with an original and attention-demanding verve. Such vocals are perfectly pitched for the music, while epic atmospherics give this anthem a bountiful edge. The future is blind muses Joe, but let's hope that it's not blind to his band.

The Fallout Trust came about after Joe and friend Guy Connelly visited Berlin's Hansa studios (where Bowie's infamous Low was assigned to record for all time). Upon returning to the UK they re-modelled the aforementioned warehouse into a space in which they could live and breathe, rock and roll. It didn't take long for the guys to recruit more band members, two of which are in fact Joe's siblings, with sister Jess Winter playing violin and keyboards, and brother Matt accompanying Guy on guitar.

They nicknamed their warehouse Q Quarters, and - in something akin to the way in which Brighton lads the Levellers fashioned a music-scene around their Metway studio - over the past couple of years the band has organised various club and gig nights, both there and elsewhere, which has in turn led to the band playing with the likes of Clor and Tom Vek. In Q Quarters the band has recorded its debut album, which is naturally forthcoming.
