Tonight saw two very different bands playing Hull.

First was the hard fast rock n roll chant fest of The Strokes at the city hall, second was the electro disco sounds of Mercury signed London band The Modern. I never got to the former but I heard mixed reports about the gig. Many said it was amazing and commented on an incredible light show, whilst others said that lead singer Julian Casablanca looked like he'd rather not have been there indicated by a lack of enthusiasm in his vocals and overall energy.

Having seen The Modern last year at the freshers gig at Hull Uni and falling very much in love with them, I was looking forward to seeing the cool sophisticates again. As I walked in Silhouette I heard the latest from idiosyncratic indie individuals We are Scientists; this was certainly a promising start. Jonof was spinning the sounds all night; he played an eclectic mix of electro and indie pop with a few classics and a couple of oddities thrown in.

He succeeded in a demanding task with, at times, a difficult crowd; remarking at the end of the night that he'd almost managed to play nearly every request as well.

Posters advertising The Modern were plastered on every available wall and a merch table positioned by the bar, selling t-shirts at a very reasonable fiver each. Since my last visit Sweet N Sour have tried to make the dance floor more intimate by placing pictured panels atop the usual barrier, which travels right round the main room.

These not only serve to create a more secluded atmosphere but mean that if you want to see the band then you have to go round on to the dance floor instead of just watching from afar. A good solution to a longstanding problem faced by the club for many a gig. Some time after eleven I spied the sharply dressed band at the side of the stage waiting for the cue to come on. When they did come on I felt their entrance could have been made more dramatic. More could have been made of the lighting as the stage throughout felt very dark, the heavy smoke didn't help the photographers either.

Last time The Modern had a magnificent looking chap wearing a top hat and tails, heavily made up, looking like a strange hybrid of Marilyn Manson and a wicked circus ringmaster; whip in hand heralding the arrival of the band. After a slow atmospheric start, musically speaking, the band raced into the funky disco number Jane Falls Down and a crowd came closer to have a look.
