Wednesday 15th February 06 - Dazed Dakotas Double Up at Ringside (2/2)
By Michelle Dee
|
(1/2),
(2/2).
|
They continued on this experimental vein with Untouchable, heavy with guitar effects that
dominated then took a short-lived backseat as the vocals kicked in.
The harmonies on the line, Ain't that the way it usually goes come over like the
Stone Roses with a blues edge.
As the song continues and the guitar and vocals combine, I sense the ghost of
Jim Morrison on the Ringside stage.
The sweet guitar line flourish that announces the end of
Untouchable is polished and well worth waiting for.
Tonight the band plays a brief number that may or may not be a separate entity to the last
song but its brevity catches the ear.
|
|
|
In my limited experience a band, especially a
fairly recent one, will throw in one or two longer tracks during a half hour set.
Maybe slowing the tempo, possibly playing a gentler ballad-styled, or story-based, song.
Dazed Dakotas do the opposite and throw in this ballsy two minute wonder
containing the warning lines, careful what you wish for/ careful what you dream at night,
sage like advice if ever there was some.
|
|
They finish on a song which is dedicated to the chavs ruining the streets of Grimsby called Modern.
The song opens in racy fashion, brimming full of confidence then turns confrontational
screaming, So you wanna be Modern at full pelt and ultimately tells it like it is...or how
we non-chavs see it at any rate. Great song but I doubt the chav scum will ever hear it,
let alone appreciate its sentiment and change their wicked ways.
|
The name Dazed Dakotas came to front man Lee as a momentary insight of brilliance during an achy morning hangover.
You can oft find him at home writing songs on an acoustic guitar, he then takes the song so the band can colour it in.
During this process the band invent new colours hitherto unseen, new ideas so far untested,
new heights of musicianship; unheard of from a band so near the start of their career.
The Dazed Dakotas play Hull again very soon. 6 th March at the Uni on the 10 th March upstairs
at Ringside with our very own double Ds Dirty Dreamers.
Also on the bill are She Likes Parties and Thief.
Be there, or be a King Prawn in Pernod..?

Music Reviews - Tuesday 15th November - She Likes Parties at The Sesh By Becky
|
|
Over the last few weeks I have watched She Likes Parties come forward in leaps and bounds.
Having gained a reputation from Sally Likes Parties (vocals) performing a capella at
Staks cafe bar, acoustic sets at Linnet, Staks and Adelphi and drunken spur of the moment
sets in the back room of Saturday night Silhouettes, the band had a lot to live up to at
their debut gig as a full

Music Reviews - Thursday 15th December 05 - Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Michelle Dee

Band Wars 2005 Result is an Insult to Hull Music.
You know there's something amiss when you have to explain the presence of your bar staff in
one of the bands to reach the final four.
The competition was held at Polar Bear, the prize was a £1000.
The four bands in the final were Jilly hates Willy Konscience,
The Cyclones and The Landaus.
There really was no contest or shouldn't have been...

Music Reviews - Bob Geldof at Hull City Hall - Thursday 1st December 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
December 1st 2005, in my mind, has gone down in history as an unforgettable day.
It was the day I met my biggest hero.
And whoever said that to meet your hero is usually a disappointing affair was wrong
in this instance, and since meeting Bob Geldof (twice in one night!),
I'm filled with even more respect for the man ... the god.
I never ever thought I'd get the chance to meet

Music Reviews - 3rd November - Mystery Jets at The Adelphi By Emily
|
|
Thursday 3rd was Mystery Jets' third visit to the Adelphi -
their previous gig, earlier in the year - and proves that they are only
getting bigger and better.
This time around the venue was a lot fuller; buzzing with people curious
as to whether the Mystery Jets live up to the hype.
Since the Jets' last Hull appearance, the band has gained coverage through
the NME

Music Reviews - Kill Surf City By Michelle Dee

The fresh five-piece from Hull have fast become the band name to drop in any
discerning musos discourse.
Recent months has seen them leapfrogging the opposition and quickly reaching and
surpassing a few significant milestones.
The band had barely been together two months when they headlined at the
Sesh (see review thisisull.com
) Linnet and Lark.
This was quickly followed by more

Music Reviews - Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Friday night in the icy rain I flagged down a cab to town.
My preferred late night spot tonight was Rhythm Room on Baker Street for a heady night of uplifting beats.
Someone once enquired, What is this rude, lewd, lascivious junk called techno? What, indeed.
One way of describing it is like a sonic sunburst

Whenever a musical icon dies, there always follows a period where their name and
image is turned into a commodity.
The best current example would be John Lennon.
The celebration of what would have been his sixty-fifth birthday and the impending
twentieth anniversary of his death has sent the record companies and the various
conglomerates that

Scarborough Beached Festival 2005 Sunday By Michelle Dee Photos by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee

Sand beneath my feet, sounds of activity on the stage, blue skies overhead, sun blazing: a strange
but rather pleasant surrounding for a gig.
Amaya Huntly and Jon Neeves had the unenviable task to open the show on Sunday.
An acoustician and Keyboard duo; the highlight of their set was the Credence Clearwater Revival
cover where they proved with a strong number they can do a

Friday 25th November 05 - Franz Ferdinand at Hull Ice Arena By Michelle Dee

Last night probably the biggest name in recent Indie music touched down in Hull as part of their Europe-wide tour. A tour, which, will see them play thirty-seven dates in sixteen different countries.
The tickets were sold out almost as soon as they came on sale, so we knew we were in for a
packed gig with plenty of people and a great atmosphere.
The Glaswegian multi-award winners sure know

Drum n bass creeps up from your feet to your fingaz and puts a smile on everyone's face...
I am aware of the genre drum n bass or d n b as it is commonly referred.
A good few years ago I stayed by my radio all night to tape the Bristol pioneer Roni Size playing live on air.
I watched with interest a docu-road movie on LTJ Bukem and the antics of MC Conrad.
The show ended up with the

On Sunday 6th of November the popular cafè bar cum restaurant on Beverley

This event is not to be confused with Band Wars organised by the staff at the
Polar Bear on Springbank.
The bands that had successfully made it to the final were Hollywood, Minus 272 and the Vels.
