When it rains it pours, as the saying goes, and this was very much true of Hull this evening, with big shows on at pretty much every proper Hull venue. Ringside weighed in with a heavyweight punk show, literally, with the monster that is a Swellbellys and Assert tour, their first together in over three years. Kicking off tonight's proceedings rather early, it has to be said, were Undefeated (who's bass player, one Greg Ullyart, had to dash off to play the Sesh with his other band The City Ghosts). It was this hardcore punk band's debut gig, and being somewhat veterans of the Hull punk scene for the last ten years it was a veritable supergroup, featuring ex members of Freaks Union, Face Defeat, Zero One, Kenny, and even Mr Mojo.

They had a big crowd support there and indeed impressed very much on their first outing, with a batch of their own material interspersed with a couple of covers from Northampton hardcore legends (in Hull they were) Not By Choice. Following on quite rapidly were another relatively new bunch of punk rock kids playing only their third show.

The Ringside certainly is a breeding ground for new talent, with its in-house promotion team Determination Inc and Smash it Up.

Back to second band C-Squat. They too are showing signs of promise with their shouty melodic punk interwoven with skanking ska guitars, in the style of Leftover Crack from USA. Contributing admirably to the show, they left the rather large crowd suitably impressed.

Assert have played Hull probably as many times as any band ever, with this being their eighth time, and, despite their last show back in October 2005 being a bit of a disappointment with a poor turnout, their was no evidence of that this time round.

They turned in a blisteringly good show, with audience involvement, on the vocals. Assert are a tad different from your usual punk band in that they cleverly use drum and news soundbite samples to augment their intensely political stance.
