I learnt later that this was only the bands second gig so any unsteadiness or nerves can be explained away. I spoke with Mo webmaster/photographer about the nature of Emo in particular the difference in crowd number to other gigs, and he said for these kids it was about having fun, enjoying yourself, not taking it seriously. More things I gleamed from the night were that Emo bands make a point of connecting with their fans.

There tends to be less of the elitism that can sometimes be found in other genres.

I also learnt that myspace is very central to both fan and band; to enable that shared experience and promoting the Emo scene. Next up were the five piece Jack Knife who I am told play in a punk goth vein with pop overtones. They hadn't practiced for three weeks so sort of fell into the first number, then managed to steady themselves for Time Will Tell.

I immediately tune into the Indie styled guitar licks from Joe as the screamo vocals blare out. The mood changes on Wake Up with short rhythm guitar sections underlying a prominent lead line. Then Spud shows some vocal power and depth of tone particularly on long drawn out sections. The overlapped vocals sometimes got lost in the guitar sound but the a cappella with the gradual build up was good.

The move into Freefall was both suggestive and dark; perhaps this is where the goth elements come in? A time signature shift sees the vocals fitted inside the drum beats from Dom. I look to the crowd and they are not jumping yet, a shout goes out to heckle the band but no one really takes up the offer.

A message of love is sent out to Jak Mudd the promoter who put the gig on at short notice. Jack Knife finish, what felt like a short set, with Empty Words. A siren of guitar starts up and I catch the line you plan your own downfall, the lead has exchanged hands once more. The flourish at the end leaves everyone hanging on a chorus...Good stuff.
