After a well-needed drink and some more tunes from Alan including a spry number written by someone right there on Newland Ave, I prepared for headliners iLiKETRAiNS. By now most of you will know that for me, they took first honours at Beached 2005 and I had been waiting to see them again for almost a year.

Having interviewed them a couple of hours before thanks to Hanna Sandman's multitudinous musical contacts, I was struck by the way I felt as they took to the stage.
Dressed as they were in their trademark British Rail jackets they are transformed. I imagine them as intrepid Norse warriors -possibly because of the beards- setting out on a voyage of discovery in uncharted seas.
I am jolted by dark mind altering chords; sounds and scenes erupt from every angle, in the space where genius comes perilously close to insanity. I look to Ashley cornet player and visuals he is stood beside an old fashioned film projector light glaring onto a screen erected on the backdrop.

On to this makeshift cinema here is projecting images of a chess game each image seems to show another of the chessmens' moves. I try to follow the moves but fail miserably I decide to keep an eye on the white queen but lose her as the image flickers and fades. The song Rook house for Bobby is playing out sumptuous and powerful as each piece moves rhythmically until the king is lying on his side.
The song Fram follows with a twisted Nick Cave vocal quality, amidst the slow dark creeping sounds I notice with amusement that one of the guitars appear to be called Nigel. I become wrapped up in sinister sonic vistas; becoming trapped in the mystery and majesty of their masterpieces.

To shake free I look once again to the projected image and find visual art fly dotted that appears to have a life of its own. David at my elbow murmurs compelling it sucks you in. The music asks whether you are prepared to take that final step, make your move; although cautious and contemplative do you dare to go the extra mile?
The images of explorers and frozen wastelands inspire and I hear/feel a gentle sea breeze in the music then underlying sounds creep like an approaching oil slick coming steadily in shore.
A threnody unfolds the tomb of Captain Oates appears then other graves of the loved and now lost. I ask myself how do these men comprehend such a thing let alone breathe life and give it shape and form, and meaning. The one I remembered from Scarborough comes next and I visibly thrill as the band give us the murderous Stainless Steel. Guy stands with violin bow at the ready then strikes a dark eerie chord as he drags the cat gut slowly across the strings of his guitar.

I hear the line the monster you made me as a foreboding tale of woe is played out. I watch mesmerised as the bow is shredded and then flashed and whipped across the tortured instrument.
Sound and light merge; blacks and reds, shining silver and gold revel and rejoice as a single cymbal rings out from Simon heralding the end of an utterly compelling set.

Music Reviews - Wednesday 8th March 06 - Jethro Tull at Hull City Hall By Dave Fox
In 1968 Jethro Tull's first album titled This Was first hit Britain, and nearly 40 years later I'm buzzing my tits off at the prospect of seeing them live. So what is it about this band that has kept them going for all this time? Jethro Tull were the first real experimental/prog rock band to really make their mark, but what really makes them stand out is the incredible talents Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 2nd March 06 - Mr. Mojo, Arcade and Mr Big at The Mainbrace By David Smith
Gigs were aplenty in Hull last night. With bands performing at both The Piper and The Adelphi, I felt obliged to check out the alternative choice. Following their highly enjoyable acoustic set at The Wellington Inn in early January, I attended the Mainbrace pub on Beverley Road last night, hoping to be equally impressed with Arcade's full band showing. Unfortunately I missed Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 22nd February 06 -Heat Four, Best Original Band at The Springhead By Anita Blakeston Photos By Jane Foster
Everyone anticipated a busy night. Both Steve Fulsham and Meg Williams are very popular bands in these heats. The Gig Shop team flew in hot from a sound engineering course in Liverpool run by none other than 'Big Mick' Hughes who has done a massive 1340 gigs for Metallica. ('Glutton' and 'punishment' spring to mind). Also engineers from Scissor Sisters, Texas and Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 25th February 06 - Dirty Dreamers, Viper 88s, They Died Too Young, When Saturn Returns and Cat - Islington Lark In The Park By Michelle Dee
A small crowd gathered outside Debenhams, the usual meeting point for these band jaunts, on a chill Saturday morning. Some were carrying an array of provisions for the long journey to the capital. Our group was made up of Danny, Matt, and John Paul from The Johnsons, Me, Jo and Rachel, Uncle Dave and Paul from the Hullucinations team, Begbie, Ash Dreamer, Darren and David. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 8th February 06 - Heat 2, Best Original Band at The Springhead By Anita Blakeston
Heat 2 - What can one say? As one partakes of post-gig port and a cigar - pphh f***'s sake what were The Shine all about? Whichever band you came to watch - and be fair - you couldn't miss the we're going to blow 'em out of the stadium attitude of The Shine! Watch out the Arctic Monkeys if you've offered them a tour support! But, back to Earth. We do have three excellent bands to talk about and, Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 23rd February 06 - Fado Rock at Adelphi By Michelle Dee
On a strange winter's night I decided to drop in to Adelphi on De Grey Street in the hope of finding some good live music. What I found was an eclectic mix of musicians and bands. As I walked in I found, much to my disappointment, that I'd missed Ade Webb. He is a rather talented singer song writer whose soothing album has calmed my nerves from time to time after a long day. Music Reviews - Wednesday 15th February 06 - Dazed Dakotas Double Up at Ringside By Michelle Dee
Due to some late cancellations the Dazed Dakotas were left without supporting acts tonight. However, rather than worrying about it they turned the situation very much to their advantage deciding to play not one but two very different sets. The first was a selection of the songs played at the Sesh the previous night, including the confessional Drugs Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 21st February 06 - The Last Stand Feat The Future Elements and Franks Right Hand Trouser at The Sesh By Jon Durham Review Photos by Jon Durham and Cilla
Who is Frank and what does his right hand trouser have to do with anything? It wouldn't surprise me if I wasn't the only member amongst The Sesh's audience left feeling a little mystified by the name of tonight's support act, FRHT. Perhaps this explains the reason why the band is currently in the process of rethinking their name. Having never seen or even heard of FRHT before Read more...

Music Reviews - 14th February 06 - Valentines Sesh Dazed Dakotas By Michelle Dee
Tuesday night after running around like a blue-arsed fly I finally got to the Sesh. As ever, it was packed from the doors to the bar and getting from one to the other was going to prove problematic. Drink in hand I steered my way over to the right-hand side of the tiny stage and caught up with tonight's headliners SideWinder. Also on the bill were Tonik and new Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 12th February - The Modern at Sweet N Sour and gallery from Hull University 18th September 2005 by Michelle Dee
Tonight saw two very different bands playing Hull. First was the hard fast rock n roll chant fest of The Strokes at the city hall, second was the electro disco sounds of Mercury signed London band The Modern. I never got to the former but I heard mixed reports about the gig. Many said it was amazing and commented on an incredible light show, whilst others said Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 1st February 06 - Silver Star at Piper featuring City Ghosts, Kill Surf City, The Morphines, Thief and Black Dog Sunday By Michelle Dee
As I sit here four weeks into my three month ban from Hull's premier live music venue, I can't help wondering why I am about to write yet another of my reviews. Is it to justify the wavering of the usual door charge? Is it because I told the bands in good faith that I would? Is it the fact that one day I hope someone of significance will finally recognise my genuine passion for Read more...

Music Reviews - Foot Loose at The Adelphi By Michelle Dee
As the lights go down in and the club fills up, relatively new band Foot Loose take to the hallowed stage. The four-piece play a pleasing blend of U.S. styled popular rock. They have that unmistakable jangly guitar sound which is put to good use on song Rise and Fall. Front man has command over his voice displaying a good range and a good set of lungs. Read more...
