Thursday 25th May06 - iLiKETRAiNS, Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames and The Minor Fall at Piper Club

Tonight was the night that Leeds came to Hull problem was not many turned up for the welcoming party.
Sure enough Piper Club on Newland Avenue was peopled with a number of discerning music fans ready
to witness the fine selection of bands chosen by the Silver Star/Raw Talent partnership.
It also played host to a bunch of students who sounded like they were on a stag do.
I dare say they alone brought the bar takings up to a respectable level but their loud outbursts
encroached on appreciating both the live music and the selection of tunes played by DJ Alan Raw.

The Minor Fall are a four piece with past of members from Send The Paramedics and
d-rail.
As they began the first number I was immediately drawn to the drummer and his free style of playing.
His drum patterns pounded past the girl singing the lead in contrast to her Indie pop vocal quality.
For the next number the guitarist takes the lead and kicks of an up beat lively Indie rock song.

His and her vocals combine well producing a layered vocal vibe as they come together for the choruses.
At times the sound strays into a harder edged rock arena.
As The Minor Fall continue through their set I begin to appreciate the long drawn out soaring female vocal more and more.
The next few numbers come a cross easy and with spaces of effortless guitar and more on stage energy and excitement.

Their final song Walk Away really caught the imagination with some cool guitar flourishes and overlapping
lyrical construct filled with passion. Just before the next band I met photographer David Robinson,
who is building up a portfolio of live music performances on

He agreed to team up
with me so the review would have pictorial representation as well as the written word.

There is movement on stage or the performance platform as Alan called it; an explosion of guitar
followed by thick staccato lyrics heavy on enunciation. The drummer is stripped to the waist already,
emphasizing the illuminated rave band wristlets each band member is wearing.
These are Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames. They are an incendiary five piece from
Leeds who appear to have thrown the rule book on the fire.
They continue to throw down licks and lines during a riotous opener.
They don't let up for a second as more insistent bass beats penetrate your mind.
After the onslaught of the opening two numbers the band began to have something of a free for all on stage.

The vocal style doesn't allow itself to be pinned down for a second with hip hop delivery merging with a brutal thrash tone.
The full on assault continues interspersed with echoic choral sounds that allow you to come up for air momentarily.

Yesterday was a very special day. Around five o'clock on Thursday evening, I was listening to
