It is vitally important to get a good sound check especially when playing out of town and even more so when you are the headline band. I felt the bands sound check was a cursory one that didn't cover all the essential sound levels etc. I am no engineer but I remember mentioning that Ash's vocal sounded thin and distant. A lot later my thoughts on the matter were backed up by Flo a regular gig goer in the bright lights of London town.
She confirmed what I had thought all along that the sound wasn't as good as it could have been. Anyway the other bands came in and all had their sound check and by about half eight nine o'clock we were ready to start.
First band on were Cat, earlier they had presented me with their Beautiful Freak Show CD and a rather impressive promo booklet. They began their set fairly quietly, and it's not until the second song that I began to feel involved. So much so, that I find myself trying to sing along although I don't know any of the words. There's classic rock elements spliced with breathy/brutal vocals from front woman Louise. She shows that she has a wide vocal range switching registers with ease.
I felt that at times tonight the sound let them down this was noticeable when it came to picking out the varied nuances in the vocals.
The different nationalities within the group lend the overall sound a European feel. The musicianship from the rest of the band is top notch, particularly Brazilian Rico's guitar riffs and solos. The drums seem to dominate at times but this could be down to the acoustics of the venue, or the fact I am barely two feet away from the stage. Towards the end of the set I sense something different, something brimming with feminine power and animalistic potency, Come on, come on you don't have to fake it.
Think seventies classic rock hangs out with Portishead at a PJ Harvey poetry comp. It's your beautiful self that we see, I hope so.
Next on tonight's rich and varied billing are a young looking band that I can only describe as Emo. Not being well versed in the genre I can only attempt to describe what I heard from When Saturn Returns. They too furnished me with a CD containing one of their opening songs, Third Step. It features a quiet understated opening then quickly morphs in to something else. Fast gritty guitars blend with a guttural vocal delivery, overlaying solid bass lines.
As far as I can gather, emo is partly about the juxtaposition of dark and light, soft and loud. The emotional lyrical content interspersed at regular intervals with dark storms of guitar and percussion. This sonic conflict is much like the years of adolescent torment that the teens, who seem to identify with the genre, endure. When Saturn Returns continue setting out their stall and I take a moment to remember how lucky I am to be in a position to witness yet more new music.
An earthy vocal introduces the start of Dead End Job, the rasping tone continues but for some unknown reason I am reminded of the stadium rock of Bon Jovi. I'll probably get no emo points for that one. Towards the end I felt the song had grown a bit predictable; however well delivered, I could still see where it was going to end.

Opening up were Hull favourites The Bonnitts who, though beset by a few technical problems, marched on through Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 15th November - She Likes Parties at The Sesh By Becky
Over the last few weeks I have watched She Likes Parties come forward in leaps and bounds. Having gained a reputation from Sally Likes Parties (vocals) performing a capella at Staks cafe bar, acoustic sets at Linnet, Staks and Adelphi and drunken spur of the moment sets in the back room of Saturday night Silhouettes, the band had a lot to live up to at their debut gig as a full Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 15th December 05 - Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Michelle Dee
Band Wars 2005 Result is an Insult to Hull Music. You know there's something amiss when you have to explain the presence of your bar staff in one of the bands to reach the final four. The competition was held at Polar Bear, the prize was a £1000. The four bands in the final were Jilly hates Willy Konscience, The Cyclones and The Landaus. There really was no contest or shouldn't have been... Read more...

Music Reviews - Bob Geldof at Hull City Hall - Thursday 1st December 05 By Steve Rudd
December 1st 2005, in my mind, has gone down in history as an unforgettable day. It was the day I met my biggest hero. And whoever said that to meet your hero is usually a disappointing affair was wrong in this instance, and since meeting Bob Geldof (twice in one night!), I'm filled with even more respect for the man ... the god. I never ever thought I'd get the chance to meet Read more...

Music Reviews - 3rd November - Mystery Jets at The Adelphi By Emily
Thursday 3rd was Mystery Jets' third visit to the Adelphi - their previous gig, earlier in the year - and proves that they are only getting bigger and better. This time around the venue was a lot fuller; buzzing with people curious as to whether the Mystery Jets live up to the hype. Since the Jets' last Hull appearance, the band has gained coverage through the NME Read more...

Music Reviews - Kill Surf City By Michelle Dee
The fresh five-piece from Hull have fast become the band name to drop in any discerning musos discourse. Music Reviews - Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room By Michelle Dee
Friday night in the icy rain I flagged down a cab to town. My preferred late night spot tonight was Rhythm Room on Baker Street for a heady night of uplifting beats. Someone once enquired, What is this rude, lewd, lascivious junk called techno? What, indeed. One way of describing it is like a sonic sunburst Read more...

Music Reviews - 13th October 05 - thisisUll.com Keeping It Peel at The Silhouette By Joe Hakim Photographs by Darren Rogers and Mo
Whenever a musical icon dies, there always follows a period where their name and image is turned into a commodity. The best current example would be John Lennon. The celebration of what would have been his sixty-fifth birthday and the impending twentieth anniversary of his death has sent the record companies and the various conglomerates that Read more...

Music Reviews - Scarborough Beached Festival 2005 Sunday By Michelle Dee Photos by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee
Sand beneath my feet, sounds of activity on the stage, blue skies overhead, sun blazing: a strange but rather pleasant surrounding for a gig. Amaya Huntly and Jon Neeves had the unenviable task to open the show on Sunday. An acoustician and Keyboard duo; the highlight of their set was the Credence Clearwater Revival cover where they proved with a strong number they can do a Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 25th November 05 - Franz Ferdinand at Hull Ice Arena By Michelle Dee
Last night probably the biggest name in recent Indie music touched down in Hull as part of their Europe-wide tour. A tour, which, will see them play thirty-seven dates in sixteen different countries. The tickets were sold out almost as soon as they came on sale, so we knew we were in for a packed gig with plenty of people and a great atmosphere. The Glaswegian multi-award winners sure know Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 4th November 05 - Shinobi featuring Grooverider and MC AOB at The Welly By Michelle Dee - 3 Page Photo Gallery.
Drum n bass creeps up from your feet to your fingaz and puts a smile on everyone's face... I am aware of the genre drum n bass or d n b as it is commonly referred. A good few years ago I stayed by my radio all night to tape the Bristol pioneer Roni Size playing live on air. I watched with interest a docu-road movie on LTJ Bukem and the antics of MC Conrad. The show ended up with the Read more...
