There's even an enclave clad in Man U shirts, presumably worn in homage to new single Manchester,
a song that features the lyric If rain makes Britain great then Manchester is greater.
Only TBS could craft a song that makes an ex-pat teary-eyed with nostalgia for drizzle.
So onto the band themselves, and you have to say that time is treating them well,
perhaps surprising given the band's penchant for occasional overindulgence.
This is especially the case with Heaton's voice - always the jewel in TBS's crown - still
that majestic, unmistakable blend; deeply rich, sweet but not too sickly, and
just enough pathos to support the wry, sardonic lyrics.

But despite this prized asset, TBS has never been a one man band.
Aside from the fact that there are eight musicians on stage, including a stonkingly good
brass section that really beefs up the rockier numbers, the depth of talent has been
a vital component of the bands enduring success.
Vocalist Alison Wheeler is simply sensational, and has more than filled the dauntingly
formidable spot previously occupied by Briana Corrigan and Jacqui Abbott, with her duet
with Dave Hemingway (who all night looked a bag of nerves) on A Little Time standing out.

Picking a highlight is no easy task. As the evening progresses the hits keep coming,
peaking with a marvelous rendering of Keep It All In, which gets the crowd, perhaps
encouraged by Heaton's funky dance moves, into a proper groove.
That still leaves time for two encores during which you feel they must have exhausted their repertoire.
It's only later, back at home, that we realise there were a good half-dozen great songs that
weren't played.
Perhaps TBS's truly great songwriting days are behind them, but with a body of work
such as this to mine, pleasing an audience is never going to be a problem for them,
whether they're home or far, far away.

Yesterday was a very special day. Around five o'clock on Thursday evening, I was listening to
The Beautiful South sound check.
The hall was a hive of activity with technicians climbing rope ladders to the gantries,
