By the time the portentous quip, If I keep myself low I'll never drop is delivered, David Tomlinson is half naked. Fluorescent lighting is unable to penetrate the shadow the brim of an army surplus hat has cast over his eyes, and assuming that those eyes have again glassed over as they had done by this time last week at The Adelphi, we notice that there exists a new menace to local mainstay Shindigg. It is perfectly apparent that Shindigg are trying to (excuse the romantic cliché) make it. What making it exactly entails these days is sometimes unclear but I suppose that it involves releasing a record/album and gaining some form of national recognition.

This intent manifested itself before the music even started whilst I stood at the trough in the gentlemen's room. A stream of attractive flyers blue tacked to the wall at eye level advertising forthcoming Shindigg events break up one of life's less action packed necessities. Very Professional.

There is a logo which is now lodged in my brain and some cool art work which I found far more interesting and provocative than the tawdry band shot of a thrash metal band on a poster to the left of the pisser (half hanging off the wall).

Shindigg introduce themselves with their signature opening The Return of the Overdue Feelings - a reliable, melodic affair containing sinister verse and wonderful intricacies which are modelled around a chiming guitar hook and wouldn't sound out of place on Siamese Dream. It is difficult to pinpoint the Shindigg sound because as soon as you make a reference, the band opens another door of influence or style. I have read the output of much speculation on the matter noting the worst to be nu-metal (a very lazy reviewer, I'm sure). I will now briefly describe to you what I believe to be the Shindigg Voice.

Think back to the hooks of Nevermind and throw them in a bowl of aggressive rhythm guitar playing, lush, fluent, accomplished (he is amazing) bass support and structured, super melodic lead guitar, which I personally consider at times to be Albert Hammond Jr-esque (but not all the time).

Shindigg berate the audience with a mix of indie, rock, garage and grunge and ultimately (which is more refreshing than you think) they have brilliant, brilliant songs. Ever seen a lonely person cry, ever known a lovely person die is the question crowed out by Tomlinson during (for me) tonight's stand out, Stella is lovely and lonely.
